Journey Return With Their First Album in 11 Years

It turns out that the wheel in the sky does keep on turning. For the first time in 11 years, pop-rock icons and continued classic rock radio staples Journey are back. The band shared details for their 15th studio album, Freedom, and released its first single, “You Got the Best of Me.” The band’s previous release was 2011’s Eclipse. As for the single, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers’ latest song has fingerprints from the band’s hit-making past. “I wanted kind of a punky rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It,’” guitarist Neal Schon says about the single. “I usually don’t go in saying I’m going to look for something like that, but then it just came to me, like ‘Wheel in the Sky’ did years ago. It just kind of flew out of my mouth.” Longtime keyboarder Jonathan Cain and voc...

Journey to the Past: How Lollapalooza’s Unlikely Headliner Influenced Gen Z

When Neal Schon revealed in April that Journey was playing Lollapalooza, the collective world met it with an eyebrow raise, a shoulder shrug and everything in between (especially when you factor in that little pandemic thing that may or may not be shutting down the country again). It seemed like an odd match for one of the ’80s’ biggest jukebox heroes (and the Adult Contemporary radio pioneers) to be playing the granddaddy of what was the alternative scene. Yet, there we were on a sticky Chicago July afternoon, the ones out of town-ers hear about but never like to acknowledge ’til they’re in it, and the latest edition of the classic rockers’ lineup was set to close out the Bud Light Seltzer stage. Talk about strange bedfellows: Journey was competing against Post Malone on the other side of...
