Beto O’Rourke Hands Kacey Musgraves a Beer During ACL Festival

It seems as though Kacey Musgraves is rooting for Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke. During the “Butterflies” singer’s headlining set during the second weekend of Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, the star told the crowd at one point, “Honestly, I could use a drink. Is there any beer or anything out there?”  O’Rourke then surprised the crowd by briefly stepping onstage to hand Musgraves a bottle of beer. Though the duo said nothing at all about the interaction, the country singer-songwriter took a swig of the beverage and said, “That really hit the spot.” O’Rourke is seen waving to the cheering crowd, before walking off the stage to enjoy the rest of the show. Fancy Hagood Teams With Kacey Musgraves on ‘Blue Dream Baby’

Country-tinged singer/songwriter Fancy Hagood has teamed with longtime friend Kacey Musgraves on his new single “Blue Dream Baby,” accompanied by a highly entertaining animated music video that find the two artists galavanting with real or imagined “gayliens” in outer space. [embedded content][embedded content] “Kacey and I share stuff we’ve written from time to time with each other,” Hagood says, “but it was actually her boyfriend who heard ‘Blue Dream Baby’ first. He told her about it, and later that night, she and I were texting, when she asked to hear it. To my absolute amazement, she was super into it, and the rest is history. I’m still pinching myself that I get to put out a song in the world with someone who is not only one of my favorite artists, but also one of my closest friends....

The 30 Best Songs of 2021

A pair of rappers pulling off the best Tom Tom Club sample since Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” (G Perico & Rucci), an iconic New Wave band trafficking in tongue-in-cheek nostalgia (Duran Duran), a blackgaze act embracing their love of vocal harmony (Deafheaven), and psych-rockers using the shopping mall as a metaphor for capitalist greed (My Morning Jacket) — SPIN‘s 30 Best Songs of 2021 offer something for everyone. For our latest year-end track recap, we kept our overall sorting process the same as 2020: For a cut to be eligible, it needed to be one of two things: 1) a stand-alone single released in 2021 or 2) part of an album issued in 2021. 30. Beatrice Deer – “The Storm” The sound is so simple that, at first, it feels almost formless: a primal drum groove, shards of metallic elect...

The Surprises, Snubs, and Changing Rules for This Year’s Grammy Nominations

On Tuesday morning, the Recording Academy revealed the full slate of nominations for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. Over the past few tumultuous years, the Recording Academy has overseen changes in leadership and nominating procedures, with one more twist being announced just this morning before the nominations were unveiled: the Big Four general field categories (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) would grow from 8 to 10 nominees each. This is the second expansion in recent years, with only five nominees in those categories through 2018. The 10 nominees for Album of the Year include on-again-off-again rival superstars Kanye West and Taylor Swift. West, who was nominated for Album of the Year for each of his first three albums, has not been in the...

Thank You for the Music, Sesame Street

The first word that ever came out of my toddler son’s mouth was “Daddy.” Okay, okay…this might be wishful thinking. His first utterance of the allegedly 30,000 words he will learn in his lifetime was actually “Elmo.” It was one of his earliest attempts at language and most importantly, his first acknowledgment of another soul in which there was instant affection when he laid his curious eyes on the bright-red, falsetto-singing monster, immediately accepting Elmo as a real person. Sesame Street recently celebrated its 52nd birthday, announcing yet another season of engaging and entertaining children’s education through the relationships and songs of incredibly likeable live actors, influential artists and musicians, and of course, those transcendent singing characters like Elmo, who is back...

Kacey Musgraves Channels Jenny Gump in SNL Performance

Kacey Musgraves was the musical guest during the Season 47 premiere of Saturday Night Live last night, and her performances were just as vulnerable as the songs that make up her latest album star-crossed. For her first selection, “justified,” the singer-songwriter bared it all. Literally. Channeling Jenny Gump, Musgraves recreated the iconic Forrest Gump scene where Robin Wright’s character sits on a stool and plays acoustic guitar nude by doing the exact same thing (with the addition of a pair of cowboy boots). During her second song, “camera roll,” the country star forlornly paced around the stage barefoot in ripped up jeans and a cropped flannel shirt. Watch both performances and see Musgraves pay homage to Jenny via Twitter below. [embedded content] [embedded c...
