Known globally as the premier destination for electronic music fans, performers, and clubgoers, the island of Ibiza has seen more than its share of legendary electronic music performers over the years. However, as with many other areas worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic has left many of Ibiza’s residents without jobs and income for the foreseeable future. In light of that fact, event organizer Universe has created the Ibiza Soul Food series. Ibiza Soul Food is a series of livestreamed DJ sets that aim to raise financial aid for those in need on the White Isle. Among the new streaming initiative’s performers is legendary DJ and techno producer Carl Cox, who is a frequent Ibiza visitor. “Ibiza has been a 2nd home to me for many years,” said Cox. R...
For years, Patti Smith has celebrated her birthday by playing an intimate gig with friends in New York. Thankfully, the punk rock pioneer is carrying on the tradition this year — albeit in the form of a livestream. On December 30th, Smith will perform with her band for the first time in 2020. Their show will be streamed by Veeps, which Smith recently used to broadcast a solo set of hers on Black Friday. “I just thought it would be nice to uphold that tradition in a certain way because it’s always a joyful moment,” Smith said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “I love birthdays because we’re born and life is the greatest thing we have, I just thought it would be a nice thing to share with everybody.” Smith sees the one-off show as something of a makeup for the world tour she...

Kim Gordon and J. Mascis during SMooCH 2020 The SMooCH livestream benefit for Seattle Children’s Hospital boasted an absolutely stacked lineup. In addition to Ben Gibbard, Duff McKagan, Isaac Brock, and Mark Lanegan teaming up to cover the Jimmy Webb classic “The Highwayman”, the hour-long event featured Kim Gordon, J. Mascis, and Fred Armisen debuting a new original song called “Abstract Blues”. Technically, these three played together before during Fred Armisen’s 2013 SNL farewell segment, but here the Sonic Youth frontperson, Dinosaur Jr. mastermind, and actor-musician operated as a fully-fledged band. The song features gnarled vocals from Gordon, flaming hot licks from Mascis, and a tight bassline from Armisen. It’s unclear whether this track was just a one-off creation for this event,...
We’re not worthy: The latest episode of Josh Gad’s quarantine charity series Reunited Apart brought together the cast of Wayne’s World alongside legendary rockers Alice Cooper, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Schwing! The 1992 film was based on a popular SNL sketch, which itself had roots in the “Wayne’s Power Hour” segments on the 1987 Canadian series It’s Only Rock & Roll. Like other editions of Reunited Apart, this one began with a tortured comedy bit where Gad pretended that the whole thing hadn’t been meticulously planned. Here, he dials up Joe Perry and Steven Tyler, but only to ask for the phone numbers of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, who played Wayne and Garth. “You brought us — two wo...
At the very least, the ongoing lockdown has resulted in some very odd musical pairings that likely wouldn’t have happened otherwise. The latest of these went down on December 5th, when Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, and Mark Lanegan teamed up to cover the Jimmy Webb country classic, “The Highwayman”. The collaboration was part of SMooCH 2020, an annual benefit show for the Seattle Children’s Hospital that usually takes place in person, but was converted into livestream form this year for obvious reasons. The Seattle institutions Sub Pop Records and KEXP were two of the event’s biggest sponsors, so it made sense that both elite and slightly left-of-center members of the rock world were featured in the presentation. For their ...

Bad Religion were hoping to tour in celebration of their 40th anniversary this year. Instead, the punk-rock veterans will mark the milestone with a four-part streaming performance series dubbed “Decades”. “Decades” will be divided into four episodes, one for each decade of the band’s existence: “The ’80s”, “The ’90s, “The ’00s”, “The ’10s”. Each episode will feature footage from a new set filmed at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. In addition to the new performances of songs from each era, the episodes will include exclusive interviews, archival footage from each decade, and more. The band will also participate in a live chat as each episode premieres. “I can speak for the whole band when I say that we were so disappointed to not be able to tour this year,” said singer Greg Graffin in a pr...
