For over a year now, I’ve either shoved my phone and mask into a pocket or carried the very same boring black crossbody bag whenever I leave the house. I’ve occasionally had to schlep about with a rucksack full of baby toys/snacks/essentials, but aside from that, my handbag collection is gathering dust and feeling rather sorry for itself. I think the fact that the V&A’s spectacular handbag exhibition was open for a total of two whole days last year says it all: This once-prized area of our wardrobes has been, understandably, very neglected. Since Riccardo Tisci’s appointment as Burberry‘s creative director in 2018, it’s safe to say that the British brand’s following has expanded and diversified to a great extent. Now the chief creative officer, Italy-born Tisci has worked to reimagine the heritage house’s aesthetic, combining both streetwear elements alongside more classical styles and blending them effortlessly to appeal to both a new and existing audience. It’s a careful balancing act he previously honed at Givenchy, where he was one of the first designers to really open up an elite name to newer clientele who look for hype products—do you remember the sweatshirts? Tisci’s fans buy into a brand not only because of its look but also because of what ...
Every fashion buyer I have spoken to this year has said their approach to 2021 is to stick to classic basics and seasonal staples such as loafers, denim and wear-forever outerwear. This shift towards timeless, seasonless items is one that we have seen for years. However, now more than ever, people are making considered purchases with sustainability and longevity in mind. One brand that is leading the way when it comes to classic items is Totême. The Stockholm-based brand was founded by fashion blogger Elin Kling in 2014 and creates classic staples that have a clear, identifiable edge. The Totême colour palette is neutral, with camels, chocolate, black, cream, and greys. The focus is on the silhouettes, however, as all the pieces play with proportion. Take the iconic Annecy Coat—i...
It’s almost hard to believe that we are now onto the third month of 2021, and so by now the majority of spring/summer 2021 designer collections have arrived in new-in sections. We have already given you our thorough guide to the most important fashion looks for 2021 with our seasonal trend report, which gives you an overview of the mood and themes for the season. It can primarily be summed up in the sentence: “Please, can I get dressed properly now?!” So what about the specific items which are destined for cult status in 2021? Predictions are all well and good, and while our editors are trained to sniff out a trending item the second it hits the runway, it does also help to wait and see the trends people are actually buying into. Especially in th...
Growing up, my mum had the most enchanting collection of beauty products that took residence in her bathroom. (My dad’s electric shaver, bare bar soap, and a lone bottle of 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner didn’t stand a chance and were banished to a different bathroom downstairs.) Atop my mum’s porcelain vanity sat her jars of creams and powders, and along the wall, deep drawers were lined with rows of sophisticated lipstick bullets. Atop gleaming glass shelves sat her collection of Chanel perfumes. Even at a super-young age (and knowing nothing of Chanel’s iconic name), I understood with an inherent knowledge there was something supremely special about the gilded bottle stoppers and black lacquer detail. The name “Chanel” was eff...
Having spent the last 13 years or so looking at expensive clothes and accessories up close means I can spot a worthwhile investment from a mile off. I may not have the available budget to always splurge on said pieces, but they’re building up into one heck of a wish list in my head—a wish list that I’m willing to share with you here, in a monthly shopping gallery that features only the most-obsessed over and adored creations I’ve bookmarked. In early March 2020, just weeks before the world went into lockdown, Chanel hosted its autumn 2020 runway show. Pairs of models stormed the runway in knee-high boots, strutting in unison while dressed in shades of tweed with bows in their hair. And while Chanel runways are always much-talked-about events, this season, in particular, one accessory seemed to steal the show. The brand debuted a range of logo-embellished CC tights, which the majority of models were wearing on the day, either in a white or black colourway. And as if by some kind of fashion editor intuition, the moment I saw them I just knew they would become a cult favourite. Unsurprisingly, almost a year later, the item remains in high demand, appearing on the Instagram feeds of several hig...
It’s safe to say that I adore perfume. It has the unique ability to transform your frame of mind with just one spritz—evoking nostalgic memories and lifting your mood like no other beauty product can. However, having such an emotional connection to fragrance means that I tend to play it pretty safe when it comes to the perfumes that I wear. Unlike my makeup bag which I switch up regularly to experiment with new colours and textures, my perfume wardrobe stays pretty much the same all year round. I know which types of scents I like—musky vanilla, heady patchouli and modern rose, FYI—and I gravitate towards them time and time again. This year, however, something has changed. I’m not sure if it’s those first glimmers of spring sunshine or t...
I’ve become a woman possessed—I simply must own a pair of leather trousers this year. It’s really rare that this kind of desire sweeps over me; for a fashion editor I actually buy very little. So when the urge comes, I know I should follow it as 99.9 per cent of the time, it results in a sensible purchase that I’ll get plenty of wear out of for years to come. Once upon a time leather trousers were the ultimate in discomfort. One can’t help but instantly conjure up images of Ross from Friends and his leather-pant disaster when considering them. But since then the technology behind the hides and fabrics used has moved on leaps and bounds (stretch leather and leather-blends are a thing of absolute genius), we’re now at a point where the associ...
The Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, on Tuesday said the National Assembly is the poorest parliament in the world. Kalu stated this while responding to a question on the status of investigative reports and alleged compromise of the lawmakers on some of the reports. He refuted the claims of compromise and blamed COVID-19 for the delays on consideration of the reports. Kalu added that the lawmakers are falling sick due to pressure from constituents making financial demands. “As per being compromised, you would have seen it on the lawmakers. This is the poorest parliament. You don’t see the lawmakers living in luxury. Compromised with what? With position or money? These guys are suffering,” Kalu said. “That is why most of the sickness they are passing through are h...
Over the years, the Olsens have mastered the art of less-is-more. The Row’s pieces are finely crafted, and it shows. Up-close, you can tell its handbags are impeccably made (making their four-figure price tags more justifiable), while the designs somehow manage to feel trendy but timeless all in one. This combination has proven palpable, as The Row bags are considered to be some of the chicest you can invest in. While The Row’s handbag collection can change between seasons, none of its older styles ever feel dated. Unlike many It bags that have come before them, to this day we see influencers and celebrities alike proudly toting their trusty The Row from years gone by, and not once have they felt passé. Such is the power of clean lines, classic colour choices, and high-qua...
In January, we set ourself a task: to write a story about a timeless, classic fashion item for every day of the month. The items could be from the high street or the most exclusive luxury fashion houses, but all had to fit with some criteria. One, they are exceptional quality. Two, they are timeless and will be a worthwhile addition to any wardrobe. Three, all of our editors agree they are the best of the best. We have written about some truly special investment pieces, such as Chanel pumps, Max Mara coats and Cartier watches worn by royalty, diving into the history of the items, the icons that have worn them and how you can buy them today. But we also were keen to show classic items that don’t have a heritage background, such as a blazer from & Other Stories which...
