If there’s been one deserving criticism of Maggie Rogers since Pharrell Williams famously likened the then-NYU student to the Wu-Tang Clan in 2016, it’s that the singer-songwriter entered the pop zeitgeist too fully formed. Sure, songs from the Maryland-born artist’s anticipated debut LP, 2019’s Heard It in a Past Life, were deftly penned — a sharp cross-section of her folk and soul-heavy upbringing and later French club obsessions. But they also were rightly dinged for being overproduced. As with so many buzzy debuts, a major label’s efforts to prove a young star’s maturity breeds contrivance. Flash forward three years, much of which Rogers spent self-sequestering on the coast of Maine, and the singer, now 28, returns Friday with Surrender, an emphatic and generally more unbuttoned sophom...
Maggie Rogers‘ upcoming record Surrender is out on July 29. Following the release of its first single, Rogers just shared the video for another one of its tracks, “Want Want.” [embedded content][embedded content] The “Want Want” video was filmed at a New York Koreatown karaoke bar. Directed by Warren Fu, who also helped in directing her previous single “That’s Where I Am,” Rogers dances behind her own gritty-karaoke-font lyrics. Rogers’ lyrics begin with some resistance, but she admits halfway: “Then when we’re cheek to cheek / I feel it in my teeth / It’s too good to resist.” And as her bandmates and fellow karaoke-goers file in to dance with her, Rogers agrees with her feelings: “I keep running away but when I leave you pull me in again / Oh / We both know.” Rogers tapped Kid Harpoon and...
A little over a week after announcing that her sophomore album was on the way, Maggie Rogers has shared its first single. Titled “That’s Where I Am,” the song was written by Rogers and co-produced with Kid Harpoon. The track was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City and at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios near Bath, England. This is her first new song in three years. Rogers, who was once a SPIN intern, unveiled a teaser for the album with its announcement. After wrapping the Heard It in a Past Life tour in October 2019, Rogers relocated from New York to the Maine coast and “cut herself off from the noise of the outside world,” according to a statement. This change of location allowed her to channel “the frenetic intensity of the last two years of her life, bringing her braci...
Maggie Rogers has revealed the first details of her sophomore album, Surrender. It will be released on July 29 through Capitol Records, the 12-track project re-teams Rogers with producer Kid Harpoon, who worked on her acclaimed 2019 debut, Heard It in a Past Life and has also previously collaborated with Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes and Florence + The Machine. As of yet, there’s no lead single from Surrender, but Rogers, a former SPIN intern, today released a 100-second album trailer that she co-directed by Michael Scanlon. In it, snippets of new music can be heard behind Rogers’ gradually intensifying narration: “Here’s all I have. It’s yours to take. Love. Hate. Anger. Feral joy. This is the story of what happened when I finally gave in.” [embedded content][embedded content] After wrapping...
