Marshmello, Dillon Francis, Major Lazer to Play Save Our Stages Livestream Festival

Live music and the world’s most historic venues continue to fall under economic pressure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As stimulus talks have stalled in the United States, a significant amount of venues, including most recently Washington’s U Street Music Hall, have announced permanent closure.  Thus, a rescue mission is underway with the Save Our Stages music festival, a project constructed by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) in partnership with YouTube. The upcoming livestream event will see some of the biggest names in music, including a few of dance music’s biggest producers, taking to a combined total of over 25 unique venues. The lineup includes a wide-ranging group of performers, such as Dave Matthews, who will be performing at ...

Listen to Papa Khan’s “Rain,” a Masterstroke of Bass Music Production

Future riddim, dubstep, future bass—whatever you want to call it, there’s no doubt that Papa Khan‘s new single “Rain” is in a league of its own. “Rain” found a home on Marshmello‘s JoyTime Collective banner, and it is an absolutely perfect fit. Emblematic of a star in the making, the track is a masterclass in bass music sound design. The Indonesian prodigy introduces spacey pads off the bat, using the enchanting nature of the verse to effortlessly build into the first drop. That’s when he goes haywire, unloading a stunning drop with lush, frenetic synths and fluttering arpeggios. It’s the way Papa Khan syncopates those synths, however, that elevates his sound design into the realm of extraordinary. His quirky yet brilliant syn...

Martin Garrix, Kygo, David Guetta, More Nominated for 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards

The list of the 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards nominations has arrived. In addition to the usual suspects, like Lady Gaga, who led the field with seven nods, and BTS and Justin Bieber, each of whom received five nominations, a number of EDM artists were also chosen. Nominated in the category of “Best Electronic” were Calvin Harris, David Guetta, The Chainsmokers, Kygo, Marshmello, and Martin Garrix, the latter of whom took home the trophy last year. It’s a bit disappointing to see MTV Europe basically nominate the most popular and safe artists in EDM without giving a nod or two to more unheralded and deserving artists, but that’s to be expected. Notable snubs include Duke Dumont, who unveiled his critically acclaimed debut album Duality&n...

Marshmello Teases Release of Papa Khan’s Highly-Anticipated Single “Rain” on JoyTime Collective

Way back in June, rising star Papa Khan shared a clip of a new tune that shook the bass community to its core. Although it was just a thirty-second preview, listeners became instantly addicted to its dreamlike melody and it became one of the most talked-about tracks in the scene. It would also go on to amass well over 100,000 views on Twitter and inspire countless begging and pleading for the release of the full track. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer as Marshmello revealed that the song will be released on his JoyTime Collective label this week. Artists and fans alike were excited to see Mello once again use his platform to introduce burgeoning bass acts to his gargantuan fanbase and celebrated Papa Khan’s inclusion. On Twitter, the masked superstar...

Zara Larsson Recruits Sabrina Carpenter for Remix of Marshmello-Produced Single “WOW”

Months after the release of Zara Larsson‘s Marshmello-produced single “WOW” comes a new remix featuring Sabrina Carpenter. Unlike many remixes in the dance music world, the instrumental section of the song is unchained. Instead, the Swedish singer-songwriter recruited the help of the former Disney Channel star for a new vocal contribution. While it definitely leans more towards “dance-influenced” than “EDC anthem,” it’s not hard to see what flavor Marshmello brought to the tune. Its bold bassline fused with pitched-up and addictive vocals creates a light-hearted and fun bop equally enjoyed by dance music devotees and pop-minded listeners.  The original version of “WOW” was released back in 2019 as a part of the soundtrack for...

Well, Marshmello Has Nabbed a CMT Award Nomination

Genre crossover songs are nothing new. They have generally been enjoyed by music lovers since 70s prog rock, some of the nostalgic nu-metal of the early 2000s (yes, it was good), or that time when Nelly and Tim McGraw teamed up for the inimitable “Over And Over.” Not only is EDM no exception to this genre-bending rule, it’s actually the genre of music that tends to breach into crossover territory the most. Over the years, we’ve seen metal-infused dubstep, big room folk-house, orchestral bass, and most recently, EDM poster snack Marshmello and pop country dreamboat Kane Brown‘s collaboration, “One Thing Right.”  The track was a big hit that certainly teetered along the lines of country. In fact, it would appear that the inclusion...

Avicii Receives Posthumous Nominations at 2020 Billboard Music Awards

Avicii may now only exist in the collective memory of the dance music community, but his legacy and spirit refuse to fade into the mist. The late dance music icon, whose estate posthumously released his third studio album, Tim, has been nominated for two Billboard Music Awards ahead of the show’s 2020 edition. The news arrives after Avicii’s would-be 31st birthday, as well as the conclusion of Suicide Prevention Week. Avicii received nominations in the categories of “Top Dance/Electronic Artist” and “Top Dance/Electronic Album.” Rounding out the list of nominees for the former category are The Chainsmokers, DJ Snake, Illenium, and Marshmello while the latter saw nods for Avicii’s Tim, The Chainsmokers’ World War Joy, ...

NBA Player Kevin Love to Host Mental Health Q&A With Demi Lovato and Marshmello

Just over a week ago, Demi Lovato and Marshmello‘s hotly anticipated collaboration “Ok Not To Be Ok” was released on World Suicide Prevention Day. In light of the melancholic pop ballad, the two artists have now scheduled a forthcoming Q&A session to discuss the subject of mental health and wellness, which will be hosted by Kevin Love. The star Cleveland Cavaliers center recently penned an introspective essay for the Players Tribune titled “To Anybody Going Through It,” wherein he explains his own day-to-day struggles of life during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Love has been a vocal advocate for mental well-being in the NBA and has been open about his battle with anxiety and depression on and off the court. For next week’...

Diplo, The Chainsmokers, and Marshmello Win Big at iHeartRadio Music Awards

2020 has seen most major social events cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic, and the iHeartRadio Music Awards were no exception. The festivities were originally slated for March 29th, then postponed to August 24th before being cancelled entirely. Still, the numbers were tallied, and iHeartRadio’s most played artists received their accolades over Labor Day weekend sans ceremonial proceedings.  Among the big winners: Billie Eilish, who won Female Artist of the Year and swept the alternative rock categories for Best Artist, Album, and Song of the Year (are we absolutely sure “Bad Guy” is alt-rock, iHeartRadio?). Lizzo earned Song of the Year with “Truth Hurts” and the legendary Elton John took home the Tour of the Year awa...

Watch the Official Music Video for Marshmello and Demi Lovato’s New Single “OK Not To Be OK”

Marshmello and Demi Lovato have finally dropped the curtain on their collaborative single “OK Not To Be OK,” releasing a nostalgic music video to accompany the highly anticipated release. The track is a poignant dance number that hearkens back to Marshmello’s last single, “Be Kind” with Halsey, in terms of sound design and altruistic context. While it presents itself as a bouncy and upbeat electronic crossover, “OK Not To Be OK” moonlights as a pensive ballad that tugs at the heartstrings with each aching guitar pluck. The track coincides with Suicide Prevention Week and Lovato and Mello have teamed up with Hope For The Day, a non-profit movement empowering the conversation on proactive suicide prevention and mental he...
