In the words of actor Glenn Close, “What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation.” It’s thanks to people like ASW that the narrative around mental health is beginning to change. The Seattle-based producer was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013, when he was placed on an involuntary hold for a week in a hospital’s mental health wing. Since his recovery, he has dedicated over 200 hours volunteering with Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit that provides free, 24/7 text-based mental health support and crisis intervention. Amid the isolating global pandemic that drastically exacerbated mental illness, ASW discovered his mission: using music and volunteerism to soothe those struggling. Out on Popgang Records, “A Garden Overrun” is the first single off AS...

One of the latest to open up about their own struggles is Derek Anderson of SLANDER, who has released a vulnerable open letter to his fans in honor of his birthday, explaining the effects that COVID-19 and the lockdown have had on his psyche. His reflection began with detailing how he went from experiencing one of the happiest moments of his life last year—his wedding—before entering ...
Over the course of her career, Elohim has made made it no secret that she’s struggled with her mental health. Using music as a means to vocalize these very real issues, the multi-faceted artist and acclaimed electropop producer stoically shares her experiences of anxiety and panic attacks with her fans. While she appears to be comfortable discussing these topics now, Elohim has not always been so open about her mental health journey. The release of “Xanax” in 2015 was the first time she spoke in such a candid manner about what she was going through—at a time when she felt truly alone. Following an incredible response from the vulnerable track, Elohim had an epiphany. “There are a lot of humans out there suffering from this too and that inspired me to keep talking about it,” she...
