By Aedan Juvet The quintessential horror franchise Scream is back after 11 years of silence and 25 years since the conception of director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson’s incomparable terrors. The fifth entry of the film series, released on January 14, enlists the extraordinary trio of legacy characters that fans have come to love: Neve Campbell’s Sidney, Courteney Cox’s Gale, and David Arquette’s Dewey. But this re-envisioned Scream simultaneously opens the door for a whole new crop of Woodsboro’s suspects. By taking on a new challenge in a genre that has gone through unprecedented change, Scream presents perfect symmetry of multiple generational cinematic desires, successfully keeping the movies’ blood pumping. By Zack Witzel Alana Haim hails from the San Fernando Valley. It’s her home. So, sweating in the streets of 1973 California as twentysomething Alana Kane in Licorice Pizza, Paul Thomas Anderson’s naturalistic new film about the frenetic, ephemeral magic of youth? Totally normal. “It’s fucking hot,” she tells MTV News. “And that’s how I grew up. You never wore makeup because it melted off your face. Every day you were running around trying to find a pool.” But she’s a musician, not an actor. Haim, her band with her two older sisters, Danielle and Este, has been her full-time gig since at least 2012. They’ve released three albums, the latest of which, 2020’s Women in Music Pt. III, snagged two Grammy bids, including Album of the Year. They’ve toured the globe, and next year, their just-annou...
I haven’t seen Spider-Man: No Way Home yet — no spoilers! — but I do know that Dr. Stephen Strange plays a crucial role in it. I know this because Doctor Strange can rip holes in the cosmos and create portals to alternate universes, or something, and that very ability is the thrust of the plot of the new Spidey flick. I also know that it’s been a very long five years since Doctor Strange has gotten to anchor his own movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That makes the newly dropped teaser for the delightfully titled film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a treat. In it, we find the man himself grappling with the ramifications of invoking said multiverse. From the looks of his brooding, those consequences are likely the exact opposite of the kind of whimsy on display...
Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed West Side Story sang off-key in its domestic debut with a subdued $10.5 million from 2,800 theaters, but the closing song has yet to be written regarding the musical’s box office fate. Heading into the weekend, 20th Century and Disney had hoped the big-budget event pic — which hits the big screen 64 years after the iconic Broadway stage and 60 years after the first movie adaptation — would clear at least $13 million domestically. Some tracking services had first-weekend estimates as high as $15 million more. The good news: West Side Story was able to claim the No. 1 spot on the weekend chart ahead of Disney Animation holdover Encanto. Overseas, West Side Story debuted to an even more disappointing $4.4 million from 37 material markets for a global st...

Get ready to step into the Matrix one last time — on Monday (Dec. 7), HBO Max released the second official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth and final chapter of the wildly popular science-fiction movie series, which sees Neo (Keanu Reeves) coming to terms with choices he made in The Matrix Reloaded. “We can’t see it, but we’re all tapped inside these strange repeating loops. Billions of people just living out their lives, oblivious. But this is the moment for you to show us what is real,” characters can be heard saying as current memories and flashbacks of his love interest, Trinity, from the past three Matrix movies play. As Neo grows increasingly doubtful of his surroundings, Morpheus — now played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II instead of Laurence Fishburne — says, “They taught...

Though Gaga went all in with method acting while playing Patrizia, she also revealed that she never took the next step — meeting Patrizia Reggiani in person to get a better idea of what she is like in real life, minus the tabloid fodder. “I only felt that I could truly do this story justice if I approached it with the eye of a curious woman who was interested in possessing a journalistic spirit so that I could read between the lines of what was happening in the film’s scenes,” she said, adding that “nobody was going to tell me who Patrizia Gucci was. Not even Patrizia Gucci.” Playing the role for such a long time — which Gaga says consisted of a year and a half — got in the singer-turned actress’ head. “I had some psychological difficulty at ...
