Zola‘s Journey From Phone To Film Screen: ‘Every Tweet Is In There’

By Alex Gonzalez On a fateful weekend in 2015, A’Ziah “Zola” King embarked on a journey that would change her life. What was meant to be a quick trip from Detroit to Tampa, Florida to make some extra cash turned into a downward spiral of visits from strange men, pimping, stripping, and fallouts. In October of that year, King shared the story in a series of 148 tweets, pioneering the Twitter thread storytelling format and receiving international attention. This Wednesday (June 30), the iconic #ZolaStory comes to life on the big screen as Zola, a film almost six years in the making. While King herself has admitted that some parts of the original Twitter story are embellished, she says writer-director Janicza Bravo managed to capture the story King wanted to tell. “Every tweet is in there,” K...

Bob Dylan Film ‘Odd and Ends’ Sets Digital Release From Sony Music Entertainment

Dylan completists have seen much of this material in other forms but for the less indoctrinated, there are nuggets to be mined, such as from Paris in 1966 when Dylan – in his skinny-suit glory – faces a hostile audience that feels he’s betrayed his folk roots by going electric, spending an inordinate amount of time tuning his guitar during the acoustic half of the show. “You see, my electric guitar never goes out of tune,” he says to the booing throng, dripping with sarcasm. Also being released simultaneously in newly packaged form are four concert films: Bob Dylan: Trouble No More – A Musical Film; The Other Side Of The Mirror: Bob Dylan Live At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965, Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, and Bob Dylan: ...

Brian Wilson’s Survival Story Told in New Documentary ‘Long Promised Road’

Film director Brent Wilson (no relation) contacted Fine after his own attempts to interview Wilson bore little fruit. Fine said his own experiences with the musician have taught him that “being there when he’s ready to talk has always been a big thing with Brian.” So they hit the road, eventually filming some 70 hours. Wilson’s importance to southern California is evident at some of the stops along their drive. A sign now marks the spot where a Beach Boys album cover was shot. While the boyhood home of Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson in Hawthorne no longer stands, a plaque marks that location, too. “I didn’t feel that Brian’s story, Brian’s third act now, had been done properly,” Fine said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I think that Brian is often seen as a recluse, as a victim,...
