Detroit’s legendary Movement festival is officially back. The long-running techno and house music festival made its hotly anticipated return to Hart Plaza for the first time since 2019, welcoming more than 50,000 people over Memorial Day Weekend. “Seeing people walk through the gates for the first time again in three years was very special and quite surreal,” said Movement Festival Director Jason Huvaere in a statement. “We’ve waited a long time for this reunion.” Movement 2022 saw headlining performances from a bevy of electronic music legends such as Richie Hawtin, Adam Beyer and a momentous hometown closing set by Jeff Mills—and we were on the ground at the birthplace of techno to capture it all. The Mountain Goats have announced their next album. It’s called Bleed Out, and it was produced in full by Bully’s Alicia Bognanno. The follow-up to last year’s Dark in Here arrives August 19 via Merge. Today, the band has shared lead single “Training Montage” along with a goofy music video. Check it out below and scroll down for the album art, tracklist, and a string of upcoming tour dates. Bleed Out was inspired by action movies from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, in which Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle found comfort toward the end of 2020. Cozied up in his North Carolina home, Darnielle watched French thrillers like 2008’s Mesrine, vintage Italian Poliziotteschi, and 1974’s The Freakmaker starring Donald Pleasence. In January 2021, just weeks after Darnielle had started writing, his ...
The composer Ingram Marshall has died, Nonesuch Records announced today (June 1). A cause of death was not specified. Marshall was 80 years old. Marshall was particularly interested in the Javanese gamelan and went to Bali in 1971 to study the tradition. In his early work, he combined his love for gamelan with his interest in the tape loop techniques introduced by contemporaries like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Marshall made a name for himself on the West Coast with electroacoustic compositions includ...

Strangers Things 4 might bring Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (Make a Deal with God)” to a new career high on the Billboard charts thanks to its repeated use in the Netflix show’s latest installment, which debuted over Memorial Day Weekend. Though its reached instantaneous viral fame, the process of securing the 1985 cult-pop favorite was apparently years in the making. Warning: Spoilers ahead. The song is first introduced as an auditory balm for the character Max (played by Sadie Sink), who has isolated herself after the traumatic events of the previous season and blocks out her friends and classmates by blasting the tune through her headphones, and later serves as a crucial plot device. In a report by Variety, Stranger Things music supervisor Nora Felder reveals she was given free ran...
It seems like an inevitability, at this point: Johnny Depp will be back on the big screen again soon. Not that he’s felt exactly absent from our screens over the last several months, as his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard raged not just in a Virginia courtroom but across the entire Internet. The resulting decision was not a clear-cut victory for either side, but with Depp being awarded $10 million in compensatory damages in comparison to Heard being awarded $2 million, the jury made it clear who they thought was more in the wrong here. However, while Depp fans are treating yesterday’s verdict as a clear-cut victory for the star, the question becomes: What happens next, at least in terms of Depp’s career — the very thing he accused Heard of damaging? Sure, Steve Jones might be in the midst of promoting Pistol, the new FX series about his band, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has to like his own music. In two recent interviews, the Sex Pistols guitarist has admitted that his tastes have changed quite a bit since being a punk rocker in the ’80s; nowadays, he’d “rather listen to Steely Dan.” The topic first came up in an interview with The Telegraph last week. “I never really listen to the Pistols’ music anymore,” Jones admitted. “I’m fucking tired of it, to be honest with you. I’d rather listen to Steely Dan.” It might come as a shock that Jones would prefer a jazz-rock group over the genre he helped pioneer, but rest assured he meant what he said.
