With the recent announcement of his forthcoming project, Earl Sweatshirt has unveiled the tracklist for SICK!, marking his fourth studio album. For Sweatshirt, the coronavirus pandemic sparked a reshuffling of what his next project would look like. “SICK! is my humble offering of 10 songs recorded in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns,” said Sweatshirt. “Before the virus, I had been working on an album I named after a book I used to read with my mother (The People Could Fly). Once the lockdowns hit, people couldn’t fly anymore. A wise man said art imitates life.” The 10 song work features Zelloperz and Armand Hammer and has already released three tracks thus far including “2020,” “Tabula Rasa” and “Titanic.” With production from Black Noi$e, The Alc...

When it comes to making bets on musical theater, Atlantic Records has a knack for spotting winners. The label has a long history of investing in Broadway, but in recent years, it’s emerged as an undeniable force: releasing the original Broadway cast recordings of both Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen (and signing the latter’s star, Ben Platt); racking up yet more cast albums for buzzy new shows such as Mean Girls, Jagged Little Pill and Max Martin co-write & Juliet; and scoring the juggernaut that is The Greatest Showman original soundtrack (with music by DEH composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul). Prior to the introduction of streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music, hip-hop was mostly shared between people on urban streets through physical mixtapes and CDs. Beginning in the mid-1970s in New York City, homemade cassettes launched the careers of artists like Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa — two Bronx-based DJs who are credited with influencing the development of the now-worldwide genre. Years later, the same tools helped foster the early careers of rappers like 50 Cent, T.I., Young Jeezy and more. While hip-hop undoubtedly bred a new subculture during that time period through the introduction of rap, new dance forms, graffiti art and distinct style codes, it wasn’t until the evolution of the internet in the 1990s and early 2000s that the genre received widespre...
JUDAS PRIEST will perform as a four-piece on its upcoming tour as the band’s former touring guitarist Andy Sneap, who co-produced the British heavy metal legends’ 2018 album “Firepower”, plans to focus on production work. Sneap, who is also known for his work in NWOBHM revivalists HELL and cult thrash outfit SABBAT, began touring with PRIEST four years ago after longtime guitarist Glenn Tipton — who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease eight years ago after being stricken by the condition at least half a decade earlier — announced in early 2018 he was going to sit out touring activities in support of “Firepower”. Earlier today, PRIEST issued the following statement: “Hello maniacs! We are chomping at the British Steel bit to return to world...

Adele holds off a spirited challenge from Gayle to scale the U.K. singles chart summit once again. “Easy On Me,” the first track lifted from Adele’s 30 (Columbia) album, zooms 37 places for an eighth non-consecutive week at No. 1. It’s Adele’s longest-running leader in her homeland, besting the five-week run at the top for 2011’s “Someone Like You” (her other leader, 2015’s “Hello,” logged three weeks at No. 1). Coming in close at No. 2 this week is Gayle’s viral Atlantic hit “abcdefu”, which zooms 14-2 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart for a fresh peak. Also scaling new heights is Sam Fender, whose “Seventeen Going Under” (Polydor) blasts 30-3. It’s a first U.K. Singles Chart Top 5 appearance for this one-time BRITS Critics’ Choice Award winner, though he does two No. 1 albums to his nam...
The Power of the Dog, West Side Story and Succession were among the winners of the 79th Golden Globe Awards that were announced on Sunday night (Jan. 9) via social media and not, as in years past, as part of a star-studded, boozy, nationally televised gala. This, as much as anything, illustrates the stunning fall from grace experienced over the past year by the organization behind the Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The group has been on the outs with many in Hollywood since last February, when a series of Los Angeles Times pieces revealed that the collection of L.A.-based journalists for foreign outlets included zero Black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices.
