MICHAEL LANG, WOODSTOCK Organizer, Dies at 77

Michael Lang, a musical concert promoter, producer and artistic manager who is best known as the official producer of Woodstock Music Art Festival in 1969, died Saturday night (January 8) at the age of 77. Lang died of complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at Sloan Kettering hospital in New York City, a representative said. In 1968, after promoting a series of concert events in the Miami area, Lang (together with Marshall Brevetz) produced the 1968 Miami Pop Festival, which drew around 25,000 people on its first day with acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, Arthur Brown and BLUE CHEER. Calvin Simon, who was a founding member of Parliament–Funkadelic and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, has died. He was 79. “We lost another Original member of Parliament/Funkadelic,” Bootsy Collins wrote on Instagram on Friday (Jan. 7), confirming Simon’s death. “A friend, bandmate & a cool classic guy, Mr. Calvin Simon was a former member of Parliament/Funkadelic. Michael Lang, legendary co-creator of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, has died. He was 77. Lang died on Saturday night (Jan. 8) from a rare form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City. His rep and family friend Michael Pagnotta confirmed the news to Billboard. Lang worked alongside partners Joel Rosenman, Capitol Records’ Artie Kornfeld and John P. Roberts for the 1969 festival held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York. “COVID-19 Canines” Are Being Trained to Detect Virus at Concerts

We’ve all heard of dogs trained to sniff for drugs and explosives, but a number of musicians are enlisting the help of dogs specifically trained to sniff out COVID-19 to ensure their upcoming tours go off without a hitch. Rolling Stone reports out that artists and bands including Eric Church, Tool, Metallica, and The Black Keys have employed olfactorily-gifted canines to take a whiff of everybody in their band and crew. If the dogs detect the virus, they notify the respective parties by sitting down. While we’re not exactly sure what scientific benefits dogs hold over rapid antigen tests (aside from cuteness), they’re managed by Ohio-based agency Bio-Detection K9, who claim their pups were “98-99% accurate in double blinded validation studies using clinical samples and actual humans.”...

Marilyn Bergman, Oscar-Winning Lyricist, Dies at 93

Lyricist Marilyn Bergman, who teamed with her husband, Alan Bergman, to win three Academy Awards as one of the most revered writing tandems in the annals of movie music history, has died. She was 93. Bergman, whose work includes such classics as “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “Nice ’n’ Easy,” “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and “The Way We Were,” died peacefully early Saturday morning (Jan. 8) in her Los Angeles home, according to family rep Ken Sunshine.
