This weekend’s debut Portola festival in San Francisco took six years to make happen. Launching tomorrow (September 24) at the city’s Pier 80, the two-day event was conceived by Danny Bell, VP Talent Buyer for AEG Presents in San Francisco, who came up with the concept after a 2016 music-fueled traipse through Europe’s electronic hubs. Bell had just left his job as Talent Buyer for HARD Events in Los Angeles, where he’d worked before after graduating from USC. (“I graduated on a Friday and was full time [at HARD] on a Monday,” he says.) First Wave of Artists Revealed for Tomorrowland Winter 2023
There’s no skating around Tomorrowland Winter 2023’s lineup. Organizers of the French offshoot of the iconic dance music festival have announced its first phase of artists. Tomorrowland Winter 2023 will feature a slew of the world’s top DJs and electronic music producers, including Afrojack, Martin Garrix, Netsky, Lost Frequencies and many more. They’ll perform across eight different stages, two of which are new. The blissful fest will take place at the French ski resort and mountains of Alpe d’Huez between March 18th to 25th. Police Launch Investigation Following Suspected Overdose Death at Nocturnal Wonderland: Report
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has launched an overdose investigation following a man’s death at the 2022 Nocturnal Wonderland music festival, CBS Los Angeles reports. Eli Gillespie-Rodriguez, 27, was found dead at Glen Helen Regional Park, where he was camping for the electronic dance music festival over the weekend. Gillespie-Rodriguez is said to have entered a tent with friends to smoke marijuana. According to CBS LA, he died “moments later” and was “left alone by the other people inside of the tent.” Police responding to the incident transported Gillespie-Rodriguez to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police Report 16 Arrests, 1 Death at Burning Man 2022
Despite some crappy things that went down at this year’s Burning Man, police are reporting one of the tamest years in the event’s history in terms of its criminal activity. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, which works with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to ensure the safety of Burning Man’s attendees, reported just 16 arrests. That’s down from 58 arrests at last year’s iteration. According to SFGATE, charges included battery of substantial bodily harm, domestic battery, possession of controlled substance, obstructing of a police officer, possession of paraphernalia and sales of controlled substance, among others.
