Spotify Considers First U.S. Price Increase for Individual Premium Plans In 2023

Inflation has been at a 40-year high for most of 2022, and so far seemingly nothing has been safe from price hikes, save for Costco hotdogs and your Spotify subscription. Unfortunately, in the case of Spotify, the days of the individual benchmark $9.99/month plan for U.S. customers may soon be a thing of the past. The subject of a price increase has been a topic of frequent speculation in years past, but on Tuesday’s earnings call the streaming giant gave the first clear indication they are seriously considering one in 2023. Spotify’s individual plans have remained $9.99/month since the company first launched them in the U.S. in 2011. Speaking with analysts, CEO Daniel Ek said raising prices “is one of the things we would like to do and it’s something we will [discuss] wi...

SoundCloud Rebrands Creator Services Platform to “SoundCloud for Artists”

SoundCloud’s creator services platform is operating under a new name: SoundCloud for Artists. The rebrand comes from one of the leading minds in establishing Spotify’s own Spotify for Artists platform. And as the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”   Tracy Chan, SoundCloud’s Senior Vice President of Creator, was previously the former Head of Music at Twitch and served as the Director of Product Management at Spotify before that. Chan led the development of Spotify for Artists’ analytics platform, which empowers artists to glean insights about their fanbase and better engage their audience. Chan describes the mission of SoundCloud for Artists in similar terms, calling it “an elevated, all-in-one platform for artists to co...

TikTok Sets Sights On Spotify, Makes Moves On Native Music Streaming Service

It looks like a new streaming platform is moving into town. It’s called TikTok Music and it will be a place for users to buy, play, share and download music, as well as livestream audio and video just like they do on the TikTok app, according to Music Business Worldwide. Sources say TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has big plans for TikTok Music, which is said to directly compete with Spotify, Apple Music and other major streaming platforms. Earlier this month, MBW uncovered a patent filing and job listings posted by ByteDance for A&R positions across North America, suggesting the company might actually be structuring TikTok Music more like a bona fide record label. Back in February, TikTok Music also began tweeting the phrase, “Welcome to a new...

Music Streaming Services Collectively Surpass 100,000 Daily Uploads

It’s hardly a secret that the future of music commerce lies in streaming, but the numbers continue to bear this out in ways that can’t help but become cause for reflection. According to industry experts, over 100,000 tracks are now being uploaded to streaming platforms each and every day. This jaw-dropping figure was most recently cited by Sir Lucian Grainge, Universal Music Group’s CEO and Chairman, who mentioned it will addressing attendees of the Music Matters conference in Singapore. There’s a lot that could be said about the scale of music streaming today and how it has empowered the independent creator to directly reach consumers. But as Music Business Worldwide points out, Grainge argued that this milestone arguably makes the label a more important part of th...

For Lil Wayne, Mac Miller & More, Bringing Mixtapes to Streaming Is a Boon — But Clearing Them Is ‘Hell’

In the last few years, many cult-favorite hip-hop mixtapes from the 1990s and 2000s have made their way to streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Tidal and Spotify. Fan demand helped, but the hard work was done by sample clearance experts like Deborah Mannis-Gardner, who negotiated with copyright owners and labels whose songs and recordings were sampled on the tapes, to secure the necessary licenses. In 2021 alone, streaming services started offering Mac Miller’s critically acclaimed 2014 mixtape Faces, A$AP Rocky’s 2011 debut Live. Love. A$AP; Megan Thee Stallion’s compilation project Something For Thee Hotties which includes a handful of her standalone freestyles from the last few years, and Nicki Minaj’s breakout 2009 project, Beam Me Up Scotty. “This all started during COVID last ...

EDM Artists Strike Gold With Spotify’s 2021 Artist Wrapped

Memories fade, but listening history lasts forever.  No one knows this better than Spotify, who has rolled out their annual Wrapped campaign. Once per year, this ubiquitous feature comes out of the woodwork to give us a glimpse into the inner workings of our musical minds: Were we happy this year? Were we sad? Who did we turn to?  Now in its fifth year, not only does Spotify Wrapped provide a platform for listener self-reflection, but it also gives artists a unique opportunity to see—and share—just how much they accomplished. And in 2021, EDM emerged victorious, with artists taking over social media to thank their fans for their dedication. From the millions of plays they achieved on their tracks to the hundreds of countries their music was streamed from, there’s a lot...

Four Tet Alleges Domino Removed 3 of His Albums Amid Ongoing Lawsuit

Amid a bitter contract dispute, Four Tet has accused the Domino Recording Company of removing three of his albums from streaming platforms to prevent his lawsuit from progressing any further.  “This is heartbreaking to me,” Four Tet tweeted. “People are reaching out asking why they can’t stream the music and I’m sad to have to say that it’s out of my control.” “I considered the people who ran Domino to be my friends and to be driven by trying to create a great musical community,” he added. “As a result Domino own 3 of my albums forever. Music I created that’s important to me and to many of you too.”  Late this summer, Four Tet sued Domino for a massive discrepancy in their agreed-upon streaming roya...
