Metric have announced their return with a new album, lead single, and massive North American tour. Entitled Formentera, the the Canadian band’s eighth studio album arrives on July 8th. Of the lead single, “All Comes Crashing,” frontwoman Emily Haines said it “is a love song that goes beyond romantic love, it’s an expression of solidarity with whoever it is you would want to have beside you in the event of catastrophe.” The track reflects this as it switches from buzzing, pulsing choruses and quiet, reflective verses. “Starting over won’t be easy, broken divided/ Split tomorrow from today,” sings Haines. “Knowing what you know/ Just makes it harder to think straight/ Starting after it breaks.” You can check out the “All Comes Crashing” video from director Justin Broadbent ahead. Our recurring Origins feature series offers exclusive insights into an artist’s latest release. Today, Lola Kirke breaks down her new single, “Lady for Sale.” Having starred in shows like Mozart in the Jungle and HBO Max’s Winning Time, multi-hyphenate Lola Kirke is already an established actress, but the Nashville-based singer is carving out a name for herself in the music world, too, by blending country music with ’80s pop influences. Ahead of tomorrow’s release of her sophomore album, Lady for Sale, via Third Man Records, Consequence is exclusively premiering the title track and its accompanying music video. With a visual treatment inspired by Jane Fonda’s Original Workout and filmed at The Parthenon in Nashville, “Lady for Sale” combines ’80s synths with twangy guitars and country-ting...
Justin Bieber’s whole life has conspired to make him not funny. He’s too handsome to need to compensate, and he became massively famous at exactly the wrong age, 14, when his peers were being bullied into developing personalities. He laughs at his own jokes like a real-life version of Mozart in Amadeus; the ridiculous laugh of someone who knows his admirers will join in. And so it’s no surprise that his new joke rap song, “I Feel Funny,” will leave you feeling anything but. The one-minute long track features Biebs whisper-rapping over a beat with a steady whump-whump-whump like a wallet slapping the sides of a dryer. The lyrics are as humorless as a comment section, and Bieber’s wit, such as it is, comes in the form of over-pronouncing words. “You entice me,” he says, snapping off the ‘t.’...
Angel Olsen isn’t just dabbling in classic country tropes, she’s embracing her inner Patsy Cline on “Big Time,” the title track from her upcoming album of the same name. “Big Time” is full of golden era country references, from the dignified warble of a pedal steel guitar, to a keyboard that sounds like the kind of tack piano that used to squawk through honky tonk bars. The lyrics are full to the 10-gallon-brim with yearning, but it’s a playful yearn, horny to suite a Saturday night but still chaste enough for Sunday morning. “And I’m living, I’m loving, I’ve loved long before,” Olsen coos. “I’m loving you big time, I’m loving you more.” Advertisement Related Video The song comes with a music video directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch. It shows Olsen performing in a wood-pan...
Save for owners of Kanye West’s Stem Player, fans haven’t heard new music from Travis Scott since the November 2021 tragedy at Astroworld. Today, the Houston rapper has resurfaced on “Hold That Heat,” a collab between Future and 808 Mafia producer Southside. Over one of Southside’s signature woozy trap beats, Travis celebrates being one of the most successful rappers in the game with lyrics like, “One of the top of the barrel/ Number one, get all the zeros.” A clip of “Hold That Heat” leaked online last summer, so it’s likely that Travis added in his lines about spending “six months down out in Cabo” recently. Collaborators like Wheezy have spoken about traveling there to work with him for a while now. Future closes out the track with the hedonist rhymes fans have come to expect: “I got a ...
Liam Gallagher is here to lift your spirits with “Better Days,” the latest preview of his forthcoming solo album C’MON YOU KNOW. The former Oasis frontman’s new single arrives today with an accompanying music video. “Better Days” feels like a natural progression for Gallagher, evoking the thrill of ’90s arena rock while cloaking it in a modern sheen. Switching between mellow verses and a bombastic, soaring chorus, the Britpop icon urges you to see the light. “If you’re lost, I’ll find you there/ With the sunlight in your hair/ And the sadness washed away by the rain,” he sings just before the breakneck drums come in. The music video for “Better Days” channels a similar nostalgia. Tuned-in Oasis fans might notice the parallels between this rooftop location and the set used in the ...
Neko Case has a new retrospective compilation out today. Alongside 22 past favorites, Wild Creatures boasts a brand new song called “Oh, Shadowless.” Take a listen below. “Oh, Shadowless” begins as a gentle waltz, with chiming guitars and Case’s sweet vocals swirling together in a genial lullaby. Before long, however, a barrage of feedback and drums break the spell, revealing a sense of foreboding hiding under the surface. It makes sense, then, that Case’s main refrain is “Sandman is coming, but he’s taking too long.” The single comes with a charming stop-motion music video directed by Laura Plansker, and its furry characters can’t seem to get a peaceful night’s sleep, either. Consequence caught up with Case to gain some insight on her new single, and to look back on her 25-year caree...
070 Shake is finally coming back with her sophomore album. YOU CAN’T KILL ME is due out this spring via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings, and today, the singer has shared the project’s lead single, “Skin and Bones.” Additionally, 070 Shake has mapped out a run of North American tour dates for Spring 2022. YOU CAN’T KILL ME follows 070 Shake’s 2020 debut album, Modus Vivendi. That LP included the single “Guilty Conscience,” which Consequence named one of the best songs of that year. If “Skin and Bones” is any indication, the Artist of the Month alum isn’t slowing down anytime soon. “Skin and Bones” is simultaneously a banger and a slow jam that incorporates 070 Shake’s signature blend of hip-hop, soul, and danceable pop. The track documents a clandestine love affair that seems to...
Lykke Li is back with “Highway to Your Heart,” the second single from her upcoming audiovisual album EYEYE. Check out the song and its accompanying music video below. Tender but devastating, “Highway to Your Heart” allows Li to mourn a lost love with slow, simmering keys and reverberating harmonies. “Night falls, it rains, I wake up alone,” she chants. At this point, loneliness is a routine: “Get high but it won’t last/ I’m still alone.” The single comes with an equally dramatic video directed by Theo Lindquist, which sees the artist engulfed in a mix of flames and rain following a car accident. While Li previously shared a teaser of EYEYE’s visual component, “Highway to Your Heart” offers listeners the first complete video from the album, which features several clips directed by...
Editors have promoted longtime collaborator Blanck Mass, aka English electronic producer Benjamin John Power, to a full-time band member and ushered in a new era with their first single in three years, “Heart Attack.” Guitarist and lead vocalist Tom Smith describes their latest offering as “a song of obsession, about losing yourself in someone; a love song, a morbid love song.” Though the subject is dour, there’s no denying the passion behind it as Smith unleashes the blistering refrain of “No one will love you more than I do/ I can promise you that.” The cinematic production’s collage of guitar syncopations, sweeping synths, and propulsive drums form a sheen around the band’s sharp-edged sound, and yet it doesn’t come across as an attempt at dulling it but rather a method to see the barbs...
