18 months after releasing the second installment of his double album græ, Moses Sumney has returned with a new record titled Live from Blackalachia, due out December 10th. As a preview, the musician has shared the video for “Bystanders (in space).” Accompanied by the self-directed film Blackalachia, the album consists of reimagined arrangements of highlights from Sumney’s catalog, recorded on a 72-acre ranch in the Blue Ridge Mountains during summer 2020. “In early 2020, my band and I gathered in my home in Western North Carolina, living and breathing together, re-arranging songs from my first 2 albums into a live odyssey,” Sumney said in a press release. “As the year unfurled and the international tour was wiped off the cosmic schedule, I realized there should be some kind of record, a co...
Billie Eilish recently took a break from stadiums and festivals to sing on the more humble soundstage of Sesame Street. The artist swung by the beloved children’s show to perform a new version of her hit “Happier Than Ever” with The Count meant to help kids count to two. Watch the performance below. “When I’m counting with you, I’m happier than ever,” the singer tells the vampire in this stoop serenade. “Numbers sound so much better,” the puppet replies. Eilish also helps a shivering Burt count his sweaters, and adds up the noggins on the Two-Headed Monster. Even Elmo lends a hand. Big Bird, meanwhile, just looks on in awe. Maybe he was starstruck. Eilish is one of many stars joining the Muppets for Sesame Street’s 52nd season, debuting November 11th on HBO Max. Musicians Kacey Musgraves, ...
Johnny Marr has released “Sensory Street” and “Tenement Time,” a pair of new singles off his upcoming EP Fever Dreams Pt 2, due out December 17th. The synth-driven “Sensory Street” follows in the footsteps of August’s “Spirit, Power and Soul” and is described by Marr via a press statement as “the story of a surreal 48 hours in subterranean England.” Meanwhile, “Tenement Time” is a rollicking tune inspired by Marr’s own childhood memories. “That’s the experience of growing up in the inner city as a little kid, running around being quite wild,” explained Marr. “This idea of ‘Forever, forever is mine’ — it’s about running around Ardwick, bunking into warehouses and getting chased. That was the first time I was self-consciously into culture: Around people who wore certain clothes, and it ...

Stabbing Westward have announced their first new album in 20 years, Chasing Ghosts, and have shared the lead single, “I Am Nothing.” The veteran industrial rockers’ signature sound remains intact despite the two-decade gap. Picking up where they left off with the 2020 Dead & Gone comeback EP, “I Am Nothing” showcases frontman Christopher Hall’s passionate vocals over a driving beat. Brooding, downbeat subject matter is again the name of the game. Chasing Ghosts, which arrives March 18th, features new songs alongside reworked versions of the tracks on the Dead & Gone EP. That release saw the reunion of founding members Hall and Walter Flakus (keys/programming), with guitarist Carlton Bost and drummer Bobby Amaro rounding out the current lineup. It’s hard to believe Leonard Cohen’s been gone for five years, but a new music video seeks to keep the master writer’s memory alive. Director Daniel Askill has just revealed the video for “Puppets,” a song from Cohen’s 2019 posthumous album Thanks for the Dance. Watch the video below. “Puppets” marks the fifth music video from Thanks for the Dance and the second offering from Askill, who also directed “Happens to the Heart.” Cohen’s son Adam served as producer for his father’s last album and worked closely with Askill on its accompanying visuals. “It has been such a gift to have the opportunity to create these visual responses to the music of Leonard Cohen,” Askill said in a statement. “Cohen has an incredible ability to create a bridge between the sublime and the prosaic — the metaph...
It’s been 10 years since Eddie Vedder has released a proper album without his friends in Pearl Jam, but that will change soon enough. The singer recently shared “Long Way,” the first single from his upcoming album Earthlings, and now he’s dropped a live version of the track. Watch a video of the debut live performance, shot by Pearl Jam director Blue Leach, below. “Long Way” is a Springsteen-esque guitar-organ ballad, and Vedder played it during his last-minute set at the Ohana Festival back in September. After he was forced to perform in place of Kings of Leon, the show became a star-studded spectacle, with Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer, Pino Palladino, Andrew Watt, and Glen Hansard comprising Vedder’s backing band. While Klinghoffer lent piano to Vedder’s solo set, Pearl Jam fans can...
TNGHT have returned with their new single “TUMS,” as well as its accompanying music video. Stream the clip below. Arriving via Warp Records/LuckyMe, the visual for the largely instrumental EDM track features dozens of creepy male faces wearing off-putting, oversized grins as they distort, grow, and shapeshift into one another over a wobbling, minimalist beat and laugh track. Taking cues from Instagram, the Dan Streit-directed clip lampoons their identities by tagging a photo of 50 Cent and Al Pacino on the red carpet of 2008’s Righteous Kill, a stock image of two unnamed doctors, and more with their own social handles. “The curse is over it has finished,” reads the video description. Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden and veteran singer-guitarist Richie Kotzen have announced the Better Days EP as part of their ongoing Smith-Kotzen collaborative project. The duo shared the title track from the four-song release ahead of its release date on November 26th. Straying from Smith’s metal roots in Iron Maiden, the song again sees the accomplished guitarists embracing their love of groove-based blues rock. From the sound of it, the collaboration has come naturally for Smith and Kotzen, whose overlap in musical taste made it a seamless and productive partnership. Better Days will mark their second release of 2021, following March’s self-titled debut. Arca has released their new singles “Prada/Rakata” along with an accompanying music video. Watch it below. The avant-garde clip features the experimental artist in a series of futuristic scenes, including a factory with human bodies strung up by their feet and a dark room filled with dancing Arca clones. In a separate room, they’re surrounded by lasers etching words like “second puberty” into a platform as a team of spectral oxen keep the machinery running. “‘Prada’ is about celebrating psychosexual versatility; a song explicitly about transness and nonbinary modes of relating the sexual energy of the collective subconscious as a celebration of life,” the non-binary artist explained in a statement, adding, “‘Rakata’ is a song about seduction, about wanting to devour the entire world out of...
alt-J are back with “Get Better,” the second single from their forthcoming album The Dream. The plaintive song is essentially a two-hander, with dummer Thom Sonny Green sitting this one out. Instead, Joe Newman strums out gentle acoustic notes while Gus Unger-Hamilton joins in with harmonies and subtle piano. As Newman describes it, the track “is the union of two songs.” One was a little improvisation he sang to his partner, Darcy Wallace, back in 2018: “Get better, my Darcy/ I know you can.” The second was a chord progression written during lockdown while Newman thought of the thousands of bereaved around the world. “I felt nervous heat when writing ‘Get Better,” Newman said in a press statement. “The context of the Coronavirus pandemic lent my words a chilling weight and gave me a new se...
IDLES are days away from sharing their new album, CRAWLER, and the Bristol post-punks are offering another preview with the new single “Car Crash.” The slow-burning track arrives with an accompanying music video that splices together footage of collisions in cinema. As its title indicates, “Car Crash” was inspired by IDLES frontman Joe Talbot’s own brush with death behind the wheel. As he details in a press release: “It’s the horrific, comedown hangover — waking up in the morning and realizing the smashes, like, what the fuck am I doing with my life?” The track is defined by chugging, slipshod drums and abrasive guitars that stew until they explode into one chilling cacophony. “We wanted it to be as violent as possible to reflect that event,” guitarist and co-producer Mark Bowen adds. “We ...
