Smith’s Know Mercy podcast, “You’re the first one to hear this: Me and Dr. Dre have been working on an album for the past two months, and it’ll be done in November.” He continued, “And it’s produced by Dr. Dre. It’s our 30th anniversary to Doggystyle. And the name of the album is Missionary.” When asked about the title, Snoop simply responded, “The first album was Doggystyle.” Rumors of Dr. Dre and Snoop’s return to music have been more commonplace than ever; earlier this April, shortly after Snoop officially became the owner of Death Row Records, the two shared photos of them in the studio. “The Chronic is bac home,” Sn...

The 1975 Jam Out New Singles “Happiness” and “I’m in Love with You” on Jools Holland: Watch

The 1975 performed “Happiness” and “I’m in Love with You” from their upcoming fifth album Being Funny in a Foreign Language as the musical guests on BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland. The quartet was flanked by an expanded lineup that included saxophone and percussion, but Matty Healy commanded the stage for the opener, “Happiness,” with the frontman’s typical shades-and-suit outfit and demeanor once again perfectly straddling the line between dapper and loose. The funky number featured a guitar solo from Adam Hann and intermittent sax breaks, but it reached jammy greatness as Healy took to the keys and opened the floor to the full band’s groove. The group then switched it up for the upbeat ballad “I’m in Love with You,” with a relatively straightforward delivery that added to the song’s inh...

The Smiths’ Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke Reunite at New York City Show: Watch

Johnny Marr reunited with The Smiths bandmate Andy Rourke during an opening set for The Killers’ “Imploding the Mirage Tour” at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Friday night. It marked one of the rare on-stage reunions between the guitarist and bassist since a series of appearances together in 2013. The pair performed “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” and “How Soon Is Now?” from the brooding British band’s catalogue. Marr prefaced the former by saying, “This song goes exactly like this” as if to point out the audience’s distinction of hearing a rendition straight from The Smiths’ original musicians. He then took its “Take me out tonight” line to heart by playing the enthusiastic host, cheekily asking Rourke, “You okay, Andy?” in between takes and energetically insisting o...

Music NFTs a powerful tool to transform an audience into a community

As one of the oldest entertainment industries in existence, the music business has experienced many technological advances that enhanced widespread adoption. The digitalization of music meant that artists could reach any audience across the world, and digital distribution gifted people with unlimited access to music.  With these advances in distribution came some drawbacks in music monetization. The way musicians make money in a digital format has reduced margins from media or video revenue. Artists have been pushed back to generating revenue from offline endeavors like concerts and selling merchandise as the online landscape has been filled with intermediaries that take a piece of the pie. “Web3 and existing platforms help us build a new chapter of the music industry.” Takayuki Suzuk...

Watch Kendrick Lamar’s Medley SNL Performance

Yesterday, Kendrick Lamar stopped by SNL to perform a few hits from his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, including “Rich Spirit,” “N95” and “Father Time.” Set in a minimal square room with a light blue spotlight and a white oscillating floor fan, Lamar opened the performance with the calm “Rich Spirit.” What first appears to be a normal silhouette of Lamar due to the spotlight quickly turns into a dancing visual as Lamar remains still while rapping. When Lamar transitions to “N95” the atmosphere matches the energetic track with an array of frenzied lighting effects. Lamar then transformed the space into a dimly lit bedroom for “Father Time.” But to bring the song fully to life, the Compton-born rapper brought out Sampha. As the two perform the emotion-laden track, the...
