Beyoncé Removes Kelis Interpolation from Renaissance Track “Energy”

After Kelis called her out for using her song “Milkshake” without permission, Beyoncé has removed the interpolation from Renaissance. The Renaissance song “Energy” contains the interpolation of “Milkshake;” notably, Bey sings a spin on the song’s classic “la la, la la la” hook toward the end of the track. While Beyoncé credited Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, the official writers and producers of “Milkshake,” Kelis expressed frustration for not being contacted about the interpolation as a common courtesy. Now, Rolling Stone reports that the interpolation has been removed from “Energy” as it appears on streaming services, including Apple Music and Tidal. It’s worth noting that the official credits on Beyoncé’s website still mention the interpolation, referring to “Milkshake” as “...

Demi Lovato Adopts She/Her Pronouns Again: “I’ve Been Feeling More Feminine”

Demi Lovato has updated their pronouns to include she/her as well as they/them. The singer, who came out as nonbinary last year, told Spout Podcast, “Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted ‘she/her’ again, but I think what’s important is, nobody’s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning, it’s just all about respect.” Explaining why they first came to identify with they/them pronouns, Lovato said, “I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy. So that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said ‘Women’ and ‘Men,’ I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me. Because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman, I didn’t feel like man, I ju...

Beyoncé Removes “Milkshake” Interpolation From ‘RENAISSANCE’

Beyoncé has removed the interpolation of Kelis‘ “Milkshake” from the RENAISSANCE track “Energy” after the latter accused her of “theft.” According to Rolling Stone, the version of “Energy” that can be streamed on TIDAL and Apple no longer includes the sample. During a short TIDAL glitch, the only part of the track that was playing was the interpolation’s isolated vocals and the rest of the song was quiet. The removal of “Milkshake” is done just a few days after Kelis publicly called out Beyoncé and the Neptunes’ Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams, stating that the use of “Milkshake” was “theft” as she was not even made aware of the interpolation.  “I just heard the record everyone is saying has my sample. After Backlash, slowthai Forced to Confirm “Destroy [Swastika]” Shirt Was Anti-Fascism

Festivals require artists to think about close and far, longtime fans and newcomers, and now, apparently, whether an explicitly anti-fascist shirt can be misinterpreted as pro-Nazi. Facing a backlash, both Osheaga and slowthai have apologized after the UK rapper wore a t-shirt that said “Destroy” above a Swastika during his festival set. As Pitchfork points out, the shirt was inspired by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s famous 1977 “Destroy” design. Historical context aside, slowthai’s performance took place on a stage with large video displays, suggesting that even distant viewers could have spotted the word “Destroy” if they looked for it in good faith. “i’m sorry to anyone who is offended by me wearing an anti-fascist / anti-regime t-shirt and the use of the symbol...
