Paul Simon wasn’t the only surprise guest at this weekend’s Newport Folk Festival. Joni Mitchell took the stage on Sunday for a rare live performance, joining Brandi Carlile to sing “A Case of You” and “Just Like This Train.” Mitchell has been largely retired from music since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015. Earlier this year, she made a rare public appearance at the Grammy Awards, where she was honored as the 2022 MusiCares Person of the Year and received a trophy for Best Historical Album for her retrospective album, Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol 1: The Early Years (1963-1967). At Newport, Mitchell appropriately performed while sitting on a throne. In addition to Carlile, she was backed by a number of other musicians, including Marcus Mumford, Lucius, Blake Mills, Taylor Goldsmith, and ...

Don’t feel bad if you missed it — so did Consequence, upon initial viewing. But composer Ramin Djawadi, as part of our weekly series of conversations about the music of Season 4, was kind enough to point out that yes, when Christina (Evan Rachel Wood) and Hale (Tessa Thompson) are having an awkward lunch together, there’s a subtle solo piano inclusion of “The Day the World Went Away” from The Fragile in the background. “If I didn’t know, I probably would’ve missed it too,” Djawadi says, once again reinforcing that when it comes to the HBO sci-fi drama, there’s always a lo...

Rage frontman Zack de la Rocha — who was seated because of a recent foot injury — continued performing the heavy protest track for a few moments before realizing there was a problem and stopping the show. “Hold up, hold up, hold up,” the rapper repeated, motioning to his bandmates to halt the performance. For those out of the loop, Rolling Loud Miami 2022 has proven to be an action-packed weekend. Day one included a wild turn of events with Kid Cudi leaving the stage after festival-goers threw water bottles at the artist. Cudi stepped in as the replacement for Kanye West who decided he would not be performing as the headliner. The choice for Cudi was a curious one considering the existing beef between the duo who have brought us classic works such as their collaborative Kids See Ghosts project. Shortly after Cudi’s departure from the Rolling Loud stage as the day one headliner, West would appear as a guest during Lil Durk’s set. For day two, while the crowd seemed to regain control, another major guest appearance took place during Future’s headlining set. The rapper first brought out Lil Du...
