Tanerélle Wants Her Sensual Space Jams To Make You Feel ‘Yummy’

By Ural Garrett The Atlanta-born singer-songwriter Tanerélle’s creative output is so vast that it seems to stretch beyond the cosmos. She’s modeled her out-of-this-world Afrofuturist style in the likes of Playboy and lent her surreal sounds to co-score Nikyatu Jusu’s buzzy horror film Nanny, which received the coveted Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in January, about a child’s caretaker with a mysterious background. Between these projects, it’s almost easy to forget the huge strides she’s made as an R&B artist and instrumentalist. In the nearly seven years since she released her debut single “Siren,” the 28-year-old singer, born Tanerélle Stephens, has crafted a singular soundscape all on her own by blending soul with a light New Age bounce. She released the spaced-out deb...

With two new songs just out and a full album, JUDE, coming later this year, Julian Lennon promises that his widely lauded performance of his father’s “Imagine” during Global Citizen’s Stand Up for Ukraine! Social Media Rally on April 8th is not a harbinger of things to come in that direction. “I don’t have a hankering for anything else. I really don’t,” Lennon tells Consequence by Zoom from Los Angeles. “I have a hankering to get on with my own life and my own work.” He adds that the “Imagine” performance — which took place on a candle-lit set, accompanied only by Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme, Rihanna) on acoustic guitar — “was ‘done. Now that’s over with.’ I’ve had a few requests to sing it live, and I’m going, ‘No, I’ve done my bit. That’s it. Onward with my work and my life now.” But Lenno...

Cardi B Joins the Sample Drill Wave on Kay Flock’s “Shake It”: Stream

The latest trend in New York drill has been the liberal use of ’90s and early 2000s R&B samples, as heard in regional hits like B-Lovee’s “My Everything,” which flips Mary J. Blige’s “Everything.” Kay Flock is the latest rapper to hop on board with his new single “Shake It,” bringing fellow Bronx native Cardi B along for the ride. Produced by Elias Beatz, the track samples Akon’s 2005 hit “Bananza (Belly Dancer).” A snippet of the song had already gone viral on TikTok, but anticipation for “Shake It” reached a fever pitch after clips from the video shoot surfaced of Cardi performing her verse while draped out in red — her wig even looks like a red bandana. That unbridled energy is the perfect fit for the sample drill production: “I gotta step up, bitch, I’m a stomper/ All of my opps ge...
