Why Are There So Few New Hits in 2022?

If you’ve been looking to catch up on the hottest new songs released in 2022, you wouldn’t find them towards the top of the Billboard Hot 100 lately. While the Hot 100 measures the biggest songs in the country every week, recently the chart has been absolutely dominated by holdovers from 2021 — some of which didn’t begin their chart runs in 2022, some of which have only hit their peaks in 2022, and some of which have just continued to hang around the listing many months (a couple even close to a year) after reaching their chart apex. Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news In fact, if you look at last week’s chart, dated April 9, more than three months into the calendar year, you’ll find more songs in the both the top 10 (Glass Animals’ “Heat W...

The Wiggles Bring Out Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker for “Elephant” and “Hot Potato”: Watch

In just about the biggest thing to happen to Australia since it broke off from the supercontinent Gondwana, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala joined fellow Aussie icons The Wiggles on stage for a rendition of their unexpected collaborative version of “Elephant.” The lead single off 2012’s Lonerism, “Elephant” is the track that took Tame Impala from a regional rising star to a globetrotting festival headliner. The song gained a child-friendly second life last year, when The Wiggles covered it for Triple J’s Like a Version as part of the lead-up to ReWiggled. The new rendition, with its interpolation of The Wiggles’ “Fruit Salad Yummy Yummy!,” became an unexpected hit, even topping the 2021 poll of the Triple J Hottest 100. How Artist of the Month Wet Leg’s Authentic Joy Led to Massive Buzz

Artist of the Month is an accolade given to a rising artist or band on the cusp of stardom. In April 2022, we give the nod to one of the buzziest bands around, Wet Leg. Getting Wet Leg on the phone for an interview is impressively challenging. In the run-up to last week’s release of their self-titled debut, the Isle of Wight duo of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers were, in their own press rep’s words, “scheduled within an inch of their lives.” Between countless interviews, their second tour of the United States, and performing on nearly every late-night show there is, the buzziest band around is hard to lock in for a 30-minute chat. All the attention has been a wild ride for Wet Leg, but an understandably exacting one. As Teasdale notes, it’s hard to appreciate the landmarks when they co...
