Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Recording Academy at the 2022 Grammys, reminding the international audience that since Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion, “Our musicians wear body armor instead of tuxedos.” Before becoming the face of the Ukrainian resistance, Zelenskyy was a professional actor, writer, and comedian, and last week he pressed the Oscars to allow him to appear. Via The New York Times they balked, telling one of the organizers of the attempted cameo that, “They don’t want to overly politicize the show.” Where the Academy Awards showed a concern for politics, the Recording Academy came through. Zelenskyy appeared in a pre-taped video, speaking as fluently in English as he has often spoken in Ukrainian and Russian. He said, “The war. Wh...

By Deepa Lakshmin Every year, the Grammy Awards shine a light on up-and-coming talent worth keeping your eyes on (and ears open for). In the past decade, the Best New Artist gramophone has landed in the arms of Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Alessia Cara, and Sam Smith, to name a few. On Sunday (April 3), Sour prom queen Olivia Rodrigo joined this hall of fame shortly after opening the big night with a glowing performance of “Drivers License.” Meg and Dua appropriately presented her with the award, passing down the honor they enjoyed themselves. There’s no doubt that Rodrigo’s breakout single skyrocketed her music career, but Best New Artist isn’t about a single chart-topping hit. It’s as much an award as it is a promise that these artists’ music careers are just beginn...
From presenting Best Picture at the Oscars to belting on the Grammys stage, it’s just another week for Lady Gaga. For tonight’s (April 3) Grammy Awards, Gaga blasted down from Chromatica to give the audience a big band experience, performing tracks from Love for Sale, the jazz album she recorded with music legend, Tony Bennett. While Bennett wasn’t at the awards ceremony in person — he retired from the stage last year due to his worsening Alzheimer’s condition — he recorded a video introduction to Gaga’s performance, blowing the pop star a kiss. Then, Mother Monster took to the stage, trading her usual Chromatica couture for an elegant turquoise gown, to sing with a big band. Her performance was transformed into a touching love letter to Bennett with videos of...
By Alex Gonzalez Justin Bieber brought his “Peaches” down to Sin City at the 64th Grammy Awards for a performance of the Justice cut. Opening the performance with a stripped-back intro, the Biebs showed off his skills on the old 88s. As the beat transitioned, Bieber was joined by his “Peaches” collaborators Daniel Caesar and Giveon, along with a full band. The audience vibed with the groove, bouncing to the beat of the song. Lady Gaga, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, and Bieber’s wife Hailey could all be seen head-bopping and lip-syncing to “Peaches.” The performance proved to be a challenge for the censors, as they bleeped out portions of the song’s chorus (presumably the “that’s that shit” adlib). Earlier on the red carpet, Giveon expressed his desire to collaborate with Adele in the future. ...
