Billboard Explains: South by Southwest

South by Southwest takes over Austin, Texas, every year, intertwining film, music and interactive media — but how did it become one of the arts’ biggest festivals? The inaugural SXSW took place in 1987 as an extension of an already-existing New York City festival. When those plans fell through, Ronald Swenson of the Austin Chronicle — who is now the CEO of SXSW — decided to co-organize it as a local music festival. SXSW has 15 tracks of programming in various formats, including summits, keynotes, panels, workshops, podcasts and more. “It would be like if every creative person in the world went on spring break together in Austin, Texas,” Brian Hobbs, SXSW programming manager, tells Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly. With inspiring speakers, major film screenings and headline-making performances...

Ed Sheeran Sets 2023 Stadium Tour of Australia and New Zealand

Ed Sheeran is returning to the scene of his all-time box-office blockbuster — Australia and New Zealand. The British singer and songwriter sets his + – = ÷ x Tour (pronounced The Mathematics Tour), which will see him fill stadiums across both countries next February and March. Scheduled to kick off Feb. 2, 2023 at Sky Stadium in Wellington, NZ, the jaunt is Sheeran’s first here since the 2018 Divide Tour, during which he destroyed the old mark for the highest-selling domestic tour in history. Divide shifted 1,006,387 tickets across Australia and New Zealand, according to Frontier Touring, bettering the 950,000 tickets Dire Straits sold for a single tour in the late ‘80s. That’s according to the independent concerts giant which produced the Divide tour, and is behind the upcoming shows. Exp...

Japanese Breakfast and Alton Brown on Cooking, Music, and Cooking While Listening to Music

What do celebrity chef and TV host Alton Brown and Grammy-nominated indie rock star Michelle Zauner (AKA Japanese Breakfast) have in common? Quite a few things, believe it or not; both have a passionate love of food, with Alton Brown hosting multiple Food Network shows and Zauner exploring the relationship between food, love, and grief in her memoir, Crying in H Mart.  Not only that, they’re both musicians; Zauner released her excellent third studio album Jubilee last year, whereas Brown is currently trekking across the country with his “ABL: Beyond The Eats” tour, which features him fronting a live band every night in addition to food science experiments, live cooking, and more. Together, they’re both ambassadors and sonic enthusiasts for Fender’s new futuristic and visually stunning...

Follow N8NOFACE’s Gore-Filled Antics in “On My Side” Video

Coming out of Down To Mars‘ studio in downtown Los Angeles, N8NOFACE has dropped a new music video for “On My Side.” Preparing fans for the release of his album Homicide, the video includes bloody visuals and a deranged facial expression for a shocking effect. Despite the video’s hardcore look, the upbeat quality of N8NOFACE’s voice makes “On My Side” a true springtime anthem for freaks, by freaks. Directed by Bobby Astro, the music video opens with N8NOFACE randomly stroking a bunny on an average workday in L.A. He repeats the chorus, which is simply “It’s a homicide, homicide, homicide/ On my side, on my side, on my side,” in a voice that’s equal parts relaxed and charged, like an old-school punk. The synth-driven song raises questions about loyalty and the extreme measures that one migh...

After Dolly Parton removed herself from consideration for the Rock and Roll of Fame, saying she first needed to make a great rock record, she got an offer from a man who’s helped more artists into those hallowed halls than just about anyone living: Steve Albini. Parton was nominated for the Class of 2022 in February alongside Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, and more. In a statement explaining why she would be declining potential Hall of Fame induction at this time, she said that she would like to be considered in the future, but only after she has “put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album… which I have always wanted to do!” Albini retweeted this statement and his offer was short and sweet: “Dolly Parton do you like analog recording,” he wrote, though so far she has not publicly...
