Jack Antonoff Calls Damon Albarn’s Criticism of Taylor Swift’s Songwriting “Trumpian”

Last month, Damon Albarn took heat for bluntly — and incorrectly — stating that Taylor Swift “doesn’t write her own songs.” Of course, Swift is one of the most accomplished songwriters of the last two decades, but the Gorillaz/Blur frontman attempted to reduce her to a “co-writer.” “That doesn’t count,” he said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing.” There was some back and forth on Twitter, with Swift calling Albarn’s “hot take… completely false and SO damaging,” and Albarn eventually issuing a direct apology. Still, the words were said, and many Swifties are still standing up for the musician. That includes Swift’s frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, who lumped the tenor of Albarn’s remarks in with Donald Tru...

George Miller Considered Casting Eminem and Rihanna in Mad Max: Fury Road

Apparently, even Eminem and Rihanna weren’t out of the question. Pop culture reporter Kyle Buchanan goes long on the behind-the-scenes drama of Fury Road in his new book, Blood, Sweat & Chrome. In an excerpt of the book published in Vulture, Miller revealed his surprising idea to cast Eminem as Max. “[Eminem had] done 8 Mile, and I found that really interesting — I thought, ‘He’s got that quality,’” Miller said. “We’d done the first Happy Feet with the late Brittany Murphy, a...

The Beths Drop New Song “A Real Thing”: Stream

The Beths are back and pining for lasting change with the new song “A Real Thing.” The New Zealand rockers toggle between dreamy pop-infused guitars and a jarring, fretful chorus. Lead singer Liz Stokes opens with an image of regular people attempting to battle climate change. “Picking up the tires from the side of the road/ Gonna push back the coming tide,” she sings. But the chorus undercuts the sentiment: “Getting rhyme over reason,” she wails, implying that while such actions sound good in theory, they’re not helping in the long run. She continues, “It’s a sinister silly season/ Maybe we can end up meaning a real thing.” “‘A Real Thing’ is a kind of anxiety dream. It’s a bit muddled, a bit frantic, a bit sinister,” Stokes said in a statement. “‘A Real Thing’ is what came out ...
