The Recording Academy has announced that the 2022 Grammy Awards will take place on April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The show, which begins at 8 p.m. ET, was rescheduled from its original January date due to concerns surrounding the COVID pandemic. The event will mark the first time that the award show has been held in a location outside of Los Angeles or New York since 1973, when the Grammys took place in Nashville, Tennessee. The telecast will also mark the first time the Grammys have been held in a location where the Recording Academy does not house a chapter. This year’s Grammys will occur at the latest point in the calendar year since the seventh annual award show, which was held on April 13, 1965, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Following its postponement earlier this month, the Recording Academy has revealed a new date and location for the 2022 Grammys. The event will now be held April 3rd at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena (via Variety). Originally set for January 31st at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena (formerly the Staples Center), the Grammy Awards were postponed due to the COVID-19 Omicron surge. In moving to the MGM Grand and the new date, the Grammys have bumped the previously scheduled CMT Awards from the venue. That ceremony will be rescheduled to November. Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena hosted the Latin Grammys back in November, so the Academy is already familiar with the setup. That should make it easier to bring in returning host Trevor Noah and scores of music’s biggest names for the event. ...
Today in Old White Guy Opinions: Elvis Costello doesn’t care much for rock music these days. The 67-year-old pop rock legend — who just released his 32nd studio album, The Boy Named If — said in a recent interview that he thinks modern rock has lost its spark. “I don’t like much rock music,” Costello admitted to Rolling Stone. “I like rock ‘n’ roll. I think if you lose the roll part, a lot of the fun goes out of it.” The “Alison” singer continued: “When people ask me, ‘What’s your favorite record?’ I usually don’t name any electric-guitar records made in the last 30 years because the beat is so square… I like things that float a bit or swing a bit — whether it’s rock ‘n’ roll or actual jazz that swings or even the way Hank Williams records lope.” Advertisement Related Video Costello w...

God bless rock and roll: Pope Francis made a rare unofficial visit outside the Vatican last week, dropping in at the Roman record store Stereosound. As The Telegraph reports, he left with a mystery CD, and the owners are refusing to say what it was. The Pope is both the head of the Catholic church and the sovereign of Vatican City, and between his roles as a religious and political leader, he has a strictly regimented schedule. Dropping unannounced at a small shop is as uncommon for him as it would be for the US President. It’s so rare, in fact, that other such visits have become low-key legendary, including a change of glasses at an optician in 2015, and a journey to buy orthopedic shoes in 2016. But he used to be quite the record rat, according to Tiziana Esposito, one of the o...
The Dixie Cups, a New Orleans girl group, did not want to sing “Chapel of Love.” “It sounded like a country song, OK?” the trio told the Brill Building professionals who’d written the tune. “We asked them could we do it like we wanted to. And they said, ‘Sure,’” Rosa Lee Hawkins, one of the group’s singers, who died on Tuesday (Jan. 11) at age 76, recalled to the Arizona Republic last year. “So we rehearsed it in a little corner, just the three of us, not the piano. And we came up with the version they released.” Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news “Chapel of Love,” written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich (with a songwriting credit to the late producer Phil Spector), hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964, displacing The Beatles’ “Love ...
Jon Lind, who co-wrote such hits as Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Boogie Wonderland,” Madonna’s “Crazy For You” and Vanessa Williams’ “Save the Best for Last,” died on Saturday (Jan. 15) following a two-year cancer battle. He was 73. “The songwriting community lost a great songwriter and a beautiful soul in Jon Lind, who leaves a legacy of iconic songs both as a songwriter and supremely talented A&R man,” ASCAP said in a statement. “The ASCAP family mourns his loss but his humor, his music and his wonderfully generous spirit live in our hearts.” Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news While still a teenager, the Brooklyn native started as a folk singer, sharing stages with Judy Collins, Harry Chapin, Tom Paxton and other legendary artists.
