Baltimore synthpop band Lower Dens are breaking up. “It’s time for me and Nate [Nelson] to say goodbye to Lower Dens,” lead singer J Hunter wrote in a lengthy post. “We’re proud of what we’ve done, and very lucky to have had so many people supporting us. Spiritually and physically, we, like, can not participate in the music industry any longer. Robbie Shakespeare, the Jamaican bassist and producer who contributed to countless groundbreaking records as one-half of Sly & Robbie, had died at age 68. The Gleaner reports that he passed away in a Florida hospital following kidney surgery. Raised in Kingston by a family of musicians, Shakespeare learned to play the bass from legendary reggae musician Aston “Family Man” Barrett. He met his longtime musical partner, drummer Sly Dunbar, playing in the Revolutionaries, the house band at Channel One Studio. The pair split off from the studio in the 1970s and founded their own Taxi Records, and also continued playing as studio musicians on records like Culture’s 1977 record Two Sevens Clash and Gregory Isaacs’ 1978 LP Cool Ruler. A bevy of punk-loving ducks pay their respects to the late Dee Dee Ramone on a daily basis. The moshing mallards consistently visit the legendary Ramones bassist’s gravesite at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary, thanks to a clever Los Angeles couple. Coyote Shivers (who played Berko in the film Empire Records) and his partner Pleasant Gehman “inherited” five ducks from a friend who had raised them but was no longer able to keep them on his property. The pair decided to feed the ducks at Dee Dee’s tombstone using a “dinner bell” dubbed “Duckskrieg Bop” (essentially a recording of “Blitzkrieg Bop” with quacks) to lure the feathered friends to the site.
