One of the notable sketches from this week’s Saturday Night Live saw host Rami Malek, his James Bond castmate Daniel Craig (appearing as a surprise guest), and SNL’s Kenan Thompson audition against one another for the lead role in a Prince biopic directed by Jordan Peele (played by Chris Redd). *** Spoiler*** In the sketch, Malek, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, nails the audition, but loses points for, uh — not being Black. But before Thompson has a chance to celebrate his landing of the role, 007 himself appears for a last-minute audition. He missed the memo about the biopic being about Prince (instead dressing as an actual prince), but nonetheless walks away with the role. “That was bad, but you’re James Bond so you got the part,” remarks Redd...
Never mind the fact that he literally titled his most recent album Certified Lover Boy — Drake evidently hasn’t always been so comfortable sharing his sensitive side. Before he gifted us with unabashedly sullen breakup ballads like “Marvins Room,” he was better known as Aubrey Graham, the actor behind high school basketball star Jimmy Brooks in the massively popular teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. In a recent oral history celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Canadian phenomenon, Degrassi screenwriter James Hurst said that Drake once threatened to leave the show because Jimmy used a wheelchair, which the rapper feared made him look “soft.” (As if “soft” hasn’t been used to describe most Drake music since 2010.) If you’ll recall, one of Degrassi’s most critical pl...
Kanye West performed live for the first time in three years during a wedding reception for D’Estree founder Geraldine Guiotte and Tiffany & Co executive vice president Alexander Arnault. Per TMZ, Kanye was among the luminaries in attendance for the soiree, which went down in Venice, Italy over the weekend. Other guests included Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Questlove, Pharrell Williams, and Chic’s Nile Rodgers, among others. Kanye, donning a custom Balenciaga mask, took the stage and performed “Runaway” and “Flashing Lights.” Notably, it marked Kanye’s first time performing secular music solo since late 2018. (In recent years, his live appearances have been almost exclusively alongside his Sunday Service gospel choir.) Unfortunately, the mask obstructed Kanye’s vocals, making it difficult to hear...

TikTok pop phenom PinkPantheress has dropped her debut mixtape to hell with it. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify. The British producer is about 20 years old, and that’s an estimate because she’s either cultivating an air of mystery, or just clinging to some semblance of privacy in our increasingly online world. Her music is steeped in turn-of-the-millennium sounds — what she has called the “new nostalgic.” In an interview with i-D, she talked about her fascination with the early aughts, explaining, “The music was so unpolished and cool because I feel like people weren’t afraid of being a little bit cringe. It was all way more experimental.” Advertisement Related Video This shows up in her samples, which can feel like an easter egg hunt for older listeners. Her...
Here comes the sun, because The Beatles are officially on TikTok. The news coincides with the release of the previously-announced special edition reissue of Let It Be, The Beatles’ twelfth and final studio album as a group, which was released in May 1970. TikTok users will now be able to use 36 of the rock band’s most iconic hits to soundtrack their videos, including “Get Back,” “Across the Universe,” and, of course, the ever-popular title track. UK punk rockers Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes have just released their latest album, Sticky. The full LP is available to stream below. Sticky marks the band’s fourth album, following up 2019’s End of Suffering. Carter and company unveiled a few singles prior to the release, including “Sticky,” “My Town,” and “Get a Tattoo” (for which Heavy Consequence exclusively premiered the music video). “This entire record is a celebration of everything that has been taken away from us, the chaos that makes us human,” said Carter in a press release. “The emotional scavengers we are, hunting around in all the wrong places for an immediate feeling we can compartmentalize and inject straight into our hearts without fear of consequence.” Advertisement Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes have establis...
On “Trouble In Town,” the third track on Coldplay’s 2019 LP Everyday Life, the band places a rather disturbing sound clip of a police officer rudely interrogating someone — this comes after Chris Martin’s solemn lament on unequal power structures and how they always “add more police,” and before a full-band psychedelic freak out of an outro, which is not necessarily what you’d associate with Coldplay. This was not an anomaly on the record; Everyday Life featured Coldplay at their most experimental, their most vital, and playing the riskiest music they’ve made in years. But what’s more, is that it sounded like Coldplay had changed, that over a span of 20 years as a band, they were almost more weathered and rugged. Fast forward to two years later; Coldplay have released their ninth studio al...
