Rock World Reacts to the Death of ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill: “What an Icon”

The rock community is mourning the passing of ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, who died in his sleep at age 72. Hill was an indispensable longtime member of the “Tres Hombres” and famously sported a lengthy beard like his bandmate Billy Gibbons. Musically, Hill had a gift for rhythm, holding down the band’s airtight bluesy rock tunes with drummer Frank Beard. ZZ Top had just kicked off a massive U.S. tour when Hill was sidelined with a “hip issue.” Longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis filled in on bass for a handful of dates, and today it was announced that Hill passed away in his sleep at his home in Houston. Following the sad news, fellow musicians and rock icons took to social media to pay tribute to Hill and his musical legacy. Advertisement Related Video John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater ...

30 Years Ago, The First Lollapalooza Felt Like One Wild ‘House Party’

By Nicole Briese It’s been 23 months since the chain-link gates of Lollapalooza last opened to concert-goers in Chicago’s Grant Park, and festival cofounder Perry Farrell is feeling just like the rest of us about the return of live music: cautiously excited. “I want to party, to put it simply,” Farrell tells MTV News on a July afternoon. “We’re getting through this together, but it’s been very difficult.” His remarks follow the world’s worst pandemic in more than 100 years, which turned the live-music scene upside down in 2020. Farrell’s annual event, which began as a traveling showcase in the 1990s and relaunched in Chicago after partnering with Texas-based company C3 Presents in 2005, was forced to broadcast online. “I want to party, man, I need to,” Farrell laments. “We all need to, we ...

The cover can be seen in the latest episode of South Korean variety show The Sea of Hope. It’s a true collaboration: Suhyun begins the performance while Onew provides backing vox on the chorus. Rosé kicks off the second verse with her dreamy vocals and high notes as she sings the lyrics off her phone. “Some people search for a fountain / That promises forever young,” she sings. “Some people need three dozen roses / And that’s the only way to prove you love them.” Rosé joins with Suhyun on the pre-chorus, and next, the Blackpink member continues the chorus with Onew. The SHINee member then concludes the cover by singing  t...

Camp Cope’s Georgia Maq Goes Pop with New Song “Someone Stranger”: Stream

Though Georgia Maq might be known as the ferocious vocalist of Aussie emo-punks Camp Cope, her solo debut, 2019’s Pleaser, swapped out her band’s scrappy DIY feel for polished synths and softer vocals. Today, Maq has released her latest single “Someone Stranger,” which sees her delving even further into full-fledged pop. With production handled by Melbourne electronic musician Alice Ivy, “Someone Stranger” is Maq’s shot at a true banger, sounding tailor-made for pop radio and foggy dance floors. The lyrics meditate on loneliness, and the role that dancing and nights out play in human connection. She channels Robyn with her arena-sized hooks: “I wander the halls of the nightclub/ And I’ll dance without anyone/ Touch my body, I feel something,” she sings, before a massive beat drop take...

Exodus Drummer Tom Hunting Is Cancer Free After Undergoing Total Gastrectomy

Exodus drummer Tom Hunting recently underwent a total gastrectomy (removal of the stomach), and it appears the surgery was a success. The veteran thrash musician is now cancer free, according to a post on bandmate Gary Holt’s Instagram account. Earlier this month, Hunting announced that he would be undergoing the procedure in his effort to battle squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. A total gastrectomy removes the entire stomach and parts of any neighboring organs affected by the cancer. The end of the esophagus is then attached to the small intestine to allow for digestion. While he must recover and adjust to his new digestive system, the message posted on Holt’s Instagram offers an encouraging outlook: “Tom has been home for around a week now, is doing very well despite the pain, is e...
