Those who’ve kept up with Muse at any point over their two-decade career know that they’re not really ones to hold themselves back, and that evidently applies to trending cryptocurrencies as much as their music. As previously reported, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, a noted Jeff Buckley fan, purchased the late icon’s guitar, and now he’s using it to record music that he’ll be auctioning off as an NFT. The guitar in question is a 1983 blonde USA Fender Telecaster that Buckley wielded on his 1994 album, Grace. Bellamy plans to use it to record the next Muse record, too, but not before he utilizes it on his upcoming solo EP, Cryosleep. As Rolling Stone points out, three of the tracks from Cryosleep — “Tomorrow’s World,” and re-recordings of the Muse songs “Unintended,” and “Guiding Lig...
Normani and Cardi B really did that on “Wild Side.” After drumming up excitement in the week leading up to Normani’s collaborative comeback, her new single dropped Friday (July 16) with a cinematic music video with stunning visuals and sizzling choreography. The video introduces Normani in a black bodysuit, posing seductively in a red room. As she pours wine over the camera, the screen pans to the singer in a purple jumper, sliding body-roll moves with several backup dancers. Then the visual returns to the red room, where Normani busts some moves on a table in a matching red outfit, black heels, and dangling cross earrings. As she implores her lover to show her his “wild side,” Normani channels Aailyah’s iconic style in white kicks and leather with baggy pants and a jacket. She brings...

For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, a highlight from Clairo’s sophomore album, Sling, has us swooning. When announcing her sophomore LP, Sling, last month, Clairo shared a note admitting the album was inspired by her dog, Joanie, who made her consider themes of care, motherhood, and responsibility. These subjects all appear on the excellent late album cut “Reaper,” which features Lorde on backing vocals. Clairo ponders life with and without a child throughout the song, employing a gently-strummed acoustic and ethereal harmonies to create a comforting environment. Ho...

Willow ft. Travis Barker: “Gaslight” With her new album Lately I Feel Everything, Willow Smith is torching the expectations of those who still think of her as the little girl in the “Fireball” video. She drops a flurry of F-bombs in “Fuck You,” and on “Gaslight,” she rages over a flawed, queer love. The latter spotlights Travis Barker’s fearsome drumming, which slingshots the song from verse to refrain as Willow pleads with a partner to “stop messing with my head / And love me instead.” It’s the pop-punk revival in its purest distillation, and at under two minutes, the song burns up as quickly as an ethanol flame. Catch Willow’s Watch Together performance of her album today on Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook. ...
Just four years ago, Claire Cottrill was creating lo-fi bedroom pop on a simple keyboard. Then her now-certified-platinum song “Pretty Girl” went viral on YouTube, and the unexpectedly biting track cascaded into a breadth of opportunities for the young artist, who performs as Clairo. After dozens of festival shows, collaborations, and an EP, she released her excellent debut album Immunity in 2019 to widespread acclaim. Although many doubted Clairo’s ability to showcase a strong musical identity due to her age, background, and her viral moments, Immunity was an impressive and personal foray into her unique brand of indie pop. (It also sparked her first Billboard hit in “Sofia,” which enjoyed TikTok attention in the autumn of 2020.) Now, two years later, Clairo returns with Sling, an organic...
Brittany Howard has lent her voice to jazz drummer Nate Smith’s new song “Fly (For Mike).” If you’ve heard Howard, you’ve likely heard Smith, as he brought his ear for percussion to her 2019 album Jaime. But he’s been a well-respected sideman for years, and has previously sat in with modern jazz greats like Dave Holland, Chris Potter, and Robin Eubanks, as well as hitting the kit for Paul Simon on 2018’s In the Blue Light. “Fly (For Mike)” is a single off Smith’s upcoming album Kinfolk 2: See the Birds, out September 17th. The song is soft and cold, like snow falling at dusk. The track comes with a special dedication. “Every time I fly, I think of my late father, to whom this song is dedicated,” Smith said in a statement. “When I wrote it, I wanted the music to evoke a ...
