By Lai Frances In June 2017, during a six-night concert following the release of their sixth album Gentleman’s Game, the pioneering South Korean boy band 2PM made a promise. As the group’s six members — Jun. K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho, and Chansung — faced the reality of mandatory military enlistment, they vowed to reunite someday, somewhere, and to reignite the seething intensity that had set apart their catalog. During an emotional finale, Taecyeon’s thank-you message hinted at the group’s return. “We’ll be able to sing as six again soon, so don’t worry,” he said to a jam-packed stadium while wiping a tear from his eye. “I don’t know when I’ll be able to see you again, but you’ll wait, right?” Until that point, 2PM had made a name for themselves with roaring sounds and martia...
Los Angeles is a city for showing up fashionably late, and Primavera Sound is nothing if not fashionable. The beloved Barcelona, Spain festival had hoped to debut an LA counterpart in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel last May. After a brief flirtation with 2021, festival organizers have now settled on September 16th through the 18th of 2022. The good news is that the additional year’s wait comes with an extra date, as the two-day festival expands to a three-day weekend. Primavera Sound LA will take place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, which has a capacity of about 25,000 people. That’s a big step down from Primavera’s digs in Barcelona, which has hosted over 200,000 people in a year. In other words, the festival will look more like its Portuguese sibling...

Shygirl has recruited slowthai for her raunchy new song, “BDE”, which finds the fellow Brits trading explicit, yet witty rhymes. Produced by Karma Kid and Sega Bodega, “BDE” marks Shygirl and slowthai’s first collaboration. They don’t miss the opportunity to make it a memorable one. True to the song’s title, Shygirl complains about boys who don’t measure up. “I need that BDE/ Yeah, steady guarantee to satisfaction,” she raps on the first verse. “Ugh, get me moaning, get me ready for the action.” Not to be outdone, slowthai joins in with prideful boasts about his sexual abilities. “I need a freak, I ain’t down for no kissing and cuddling,” he spits. “Go down, come up when you swallowed it on your feet/ Fold you, got your chest on your knees/ You’ll be walking with a limp for the rest of the...

On first glance, How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? may look like the hottest indie rock festival of 2010, but it’s actually the stacked new album from Big Red Machine. The supergroup from Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Aaron Dessner (The National) will drop their newest studio set on August 27th. It features Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes, Sharon Van Etten, and more, and as a preview the band is offering the new song “Latter Days” with Anaïs Mitchell. This will be Big Red Machine’s second album following their eponymous debut in 2018. That project leaned heavily on the voice of Vernon, but this time around they’re mixing things up. Dessner handles lead vocals on three tracks, and as new single “Latter Days” demonstrates, they’re also making space for guest vocalists. Mitchell is th...

Nandi Bushell is 11 now, and like any self-respecting wunderkind with a massive online following, she’s hosting jam sessions with some of the brightest stars of today. Bushell has shared a new instrumental cover of “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” by Arctic Monkeys, and her performance is accompanied by actual Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. “Matt Helders came to my house for a cup of Tea and a Jam with me,” Bushell wrote on Instagram. “We had the best time! We jammed loads of songs together and had a lot of fun improvising drum beats.” They also played Arctic Monkeys songs, which begs a question: if you play a band’s songs with members of the band, is it still a cover, or is it more of an audition? Asking for Alex Turner. The new performance of “I Bet You Look Good on the Dan...
