In Music City, writing is key. There’s a reason the slogan around the business that built Nashville is “three chords and the truth,” a phrase originally from Harlan Howard, and members of the current generation of Nashville’s singer-songwriters seem to be getting back to that original premise. Listeners can tell when an artist isn’t being honest. As a bedroom-pop writer and producer, Gatlin is part of a demographic not always discussed when it comes to Nashville, where country is king but the pop, R&B, and rock scenes are just as (if not more) interesting. With her latest EP, To Remind Me Of Home, Gatlin taps into that critical honesty, speaking for young people in particular who are surrounded by heartache, loneliness, and a general sense of detachment. The EP’s single, “Hospital,” sp...
Breezy indie rockers Wild Pink have just released a gorgeous new EP called 3 Songs. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. As the title indicates, the EP consists of three songs in total: the gorgeous single “Ohio” featuring Samia that came out last month, the punchier number “Leferever” that brings to mind a dusty Bruce Springsteen track, and the seven-minute-long epic “A Scene from the Eau Gallie Causeway”. “Ohio” is undoubtedly the EP’s standout track, and apparently it came about way back in 2018. “This song is about feeling isolated but then the relief that comes from seeing family/friends,” said singer John Ross in an earlier statement. “It’s about getting some comfort from some of the mundane things I took for granted growing up, like daily summer storms and the hum from an os...
The Vaccines have unveiled the title track and release date for their upcoming album Back in Love City. The British rock band’s fifth studio set is slated to hit shelves, streamers, and digital retailers on September 10th via Super Easy/AWAL Recordings. According to frontman Justin Hayward-Young, the 13-track studio set was inspired by all types of cityscapes — from the real to the fictional — and the idea took root when he traded homes (The Holiday-style) with a someone in L.A. “I literally swapped lives with a stranger. I lived in [his] house and drove his car while he lived in mine, but we’d never met and had no previous connections,” he said in a statement. “Back In Love City” finds the quintet delivering a chant-ready, guitar-driven chorus between Hayward-Young’s cheeky...

There are layers to Indigenous queer pop singer Jayli Wolf’s debut solo EP, Wild Whisper. Between her childhood in a doomsday cult, to coming to terms with her sexual identity, and reacquainting herself with her heritage, the Toronto-based artist packs a mighty punch with all six tracks, though its themes hit hardest on “Would You Die.” Its haunting visual, which Wolf directed, illustrates the ways in which we bring our baggage to every new relationship, shedding armor and revealing our deepest secrets, always with the possibility of creating new scars. “Now you know my secrets / I’m haunted by a stranger,” she sings over a glitchy and psychedelic slow-moving track. Still, Wolf seems to find the answer to her own question from within: Love for oneself cannot be superseded. —Carson Mlnarik ...

“My mama told me when I was young/ We are all born superstars.” The familiar opening line of “Born This Way,” the title track from a certain seminal album, carries just a little weight for Lady Gaga, who was born Stefani Germanotta, and who by her own volition became a classically-trained, boundary-pushing social provocateur with a vital presence in the pop zeitgeist. It takes a certain caliber of artist to become mononymous: Prince. Madonna. Gaga. Lady Gaga and pop culture both looked quite different in 2011 during Born This Way’s initial release, and reviewing Gaga’s boldness from that time — both in her melodramatic public persona and innovative production choices — serves as a reminder for how much has changed in the decade that has passed since. Gay marriage had not yet been legalized...
Gift of Gab, who set a new standard for tongue-twisting lyricism as part of hip-hop duo Blackalicious, has died at 50. The artist also known as Timothy J. Parker passed away on June 18th. His exact cause of death has not been released publicly, though a statement from his family and crew noted that he had been diagnosed with kidney failure in 2014. He was undergoing dialysis three to four times a week even while on tour, and successfully received a new kidney in 2020. Born October 7th, 1971, Gift of Gab became a fixture in the Sacramento rap scene in the early 1990s. But with the formation of Blackalicious alongside DJ Chief Xcel (aka Xavier Mosley), he would change the trajectory of hip-hop forever. The pair’s first two albums, 1999’s Nia and 2002’s Blazing Arrow, ...

Yesterday, June 23rd, Britney Spears asked for an end to what she described as a brutal and cruel conservatorship. Now, the troubled pop star has made a statement addressing her fans, apologizing for “pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years,” and reflecting on what it means to have a “fairy tale life.” Spears has quietly been pushing for an end to the conservatorship since 2014, and her new Instagram post on June 24th is one of the rare times she’s addressed her case publicly. Alongside a quote attributed to Albert Einstein, she reflected on her desire to put on a happy face. “That was one of my mother’s best traits,” she wrote, “no matter how shitty a day was when I was younger … for the sake of me and my siblings she always pretended like everything was ok. I’m bringing this to p...
