Following a leave of absence, Winston Marshall, lead guitarist and banjoist for Mumford & Sons, is exiting the band. The news come after a March controversy in which Marshall tweeted support for a dishonest book by right-wing provocateur Andy Ngo. Marshall made the announcement in the Medium post “Why I’m Leaving Mumford & Sons”. In the article, he reiterated his support for Ngo, whom he previously called a “brave man.” He also said he should never have apologized for backing Ngo and denied that he himself supports far-right causes. The beleaguered instrumentalist began by reminiscing on all the fun he’s had on tour. “Who in their right mind would willingly walk away from this?” he asked. “It turns out I would. And as you might imagine it’s been no easy decision.” Re...

By Harron Walker Teddy Geiger entered March of last year the same way she spends most of her time: squirreled away in the studio making music with other artists. She was playing around with some old, unfinished demos she recorded over a decade prior, back when she was living in Queens in the early years of her career. The band she was working with, the indie foursome Arlie, passed on the song that came out of those writing sessions — an echoey, guitar-driven pop track called “Sharkbait” about seeing the danger in what you want and going after it anyway — but Geiger held onto it, later releasing it herself. “That’s how I was feeling [at the time],” she tells me over Zoom a year later. “Like, this is who I am. What else am I going to do?” She is sitting at a table outside of Henson Recording...

Mick Jenkins has unveiled his new single “Truffles”, produced by Monte Booker and available via Cinematic Music Group. The track serves as the rapper’s follow-up to his pair of 2020 one-offs, “Frontstreet Freestyle” and the Kojey Radical-assisted “Snakes”, as well as last year’s The Circus EP. The accompanying visual for “Truffles” — directed by Andre Muir — depicts Jenkins in an eerie suburban neighborhood filled with smiling, zombie-like residents that slowly transform from Black to white. “It was Goyard totes and Carhartt tees/ And atop the Coldplay carpet ’round my feet/ The Dolce scarf that’s ’round my face, forgot my mask/ Fuck,” he raps as he watches a jogger make her way down the street. Later, he’s surrounded by his creepy, dead-eyed neighbors as they invade his house, c...
Britney Spears appeared in Los Angeles court on Wednesday and formally asked a judge to end her decade-long conservatorship. Update: You can read a full transcription of Spears’ remarks in court below. From the very onset of her remarks, she was on the offensive, objecting to a petition for a closed hearing: “They’ve done a good job at exploiting my life. So I feel like it should be an open court hearing and they should listen to what I have to say.” Comparing her situation to “sex trafficking,” Spears said she wa...
