Olly Alexander is getting the queer party started. On Tuesday (June 22), the Years & Years soloist and It’s a Sin star dropped his new magical cover of the iconic Lady Gaga hit “The Edge of Glory.” The new version comes three days ahead of the special anniversary release of Born This Way Reimagined: The Tenth Anniversary. Adding a sparkly electro-pop flair to the original’s arena-sized grandeur, Alexander brings the opportunity for LGBTQ+ people to dance and celebrate their queerness. And Twitter fans are living for it. While Born This Way Reimagined will still contain its original 14 songs, the album also has a series of new covers from several featured artists who represent and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Alexander’s version is the fourth cover to be released thus far. Other a...
Ahead of Britney Spears’ appearance in court on Wednesday to address the status of her conservatorship, The New York Times has published an expansive report detailing her behind-the-scenes push to change the situation. According to confidential records obtained by The Times, the pop singer has for several years called for the removal of her father from his role as conservator. During a 2014 hearing closed to the public, Britney’s lawyer Samuel Ingham III told the court his client wanted to explore the removal of her father from control of her finances and career. According to Ingham, Spears had raised a “shopping list” of grievances including his drinking. In 2016, a court investigator assigned to Britney’s case reported she felt the conservatorship had become “an oppressive and controllin...

By Hugh McIntyre “Where do I belong?” This question opens Rina Sawayama’s touching and heartfelt “Chosen Family,” and it is one that far too many LGBTQ+ people have had to ask themselves as they navigate existing authentically in a world that still largely sees them as “other.” The query pops up constantly in the lives of those who identify as part of the community, as they can so often feel uninvited, unincluded, or unwelcome at school, in the workplace, or worst of all, at home. According to the Trevor Project, queer youth are “almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth.” “I lost relationships with quite a bit of my actual family after coming out, which was devastating for me at the time,” explained Elvis, a queer 23-year-old Sawayama fan from Da...

Billie Eilish has issued an apology for a video that surfaced last week showing her lip-synching to a song with an anti-Asian racial slur. The footage, taken when she was “13 or 14,” according to Eilish, also includes her use of a made-up language that some perceived as mocking Asian communities. The pop star denies that interpretation, calling it, “silly gibberish,” and, “in NO way an imitation of anyone or any language, accent or culture.” The video, posted on TikTok on June 13th, features Eilish mouthing along to the words of Tyler, the Creator’s 2011 song “Fish”. The track opens with, “Slip it in her drink and in the blink/ Of an eye I can make a white girl look c—-.” Eilish addressed the controversy in a statement on her Instagram stories. “I love you guys, and many of you h...

Lucy Dacus’ third album, Home Video, is out this Friday, and the singer-songwriter celebrated release week with a remote musical guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Performing her latest single “Brando” from the Virginia Repertory Theatre, Dacus aptly brought an old Hollywood style to complement the track’s classic film references. Complete with sequined dresses, bowties, and a dance routine that would make Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers proud, Dacus’ performance of “Brando” begins with a black-and-white filter that bursts into color just in time for the song’s climax. With the vintage setting of the theatre as their backdrop, Dacus, her band, and her dancers feel like they’re lifted straight from a 1940s film. Watch the clip below. “Brando” is the fourth and final preview we get o...
