R&B sister duo Chloe x Halle can make romance sound heavenly with honeyed harmonies on cuts like “Ungodly Hour” and “Don’t Make it Harder on Me,” but they can also make it sound deadly. “Tipsy,” a deliciously explicit standout track from Ungodly Hour, leans into the more intoxicating nuances of love: infatuation, jealousy, and revenge. “I might be a little tipsy on your love / Makes me a little crazy, so what,” the two sing in its dark but dreamy chorus, shrugging off threats they’ve made towards boys who dare break their hearts. While the breakdown in the bridge provides a moment of brevity – “We just havin’ fun,” they coo – it really shouldn’t be that hard, right? As the two say: “If you love your little life, then don’t fuck up.” —Carson Mlnarik You Deserve to Make Money Even When y...
By Mark Braboy If the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded the country of anything, it’s that love still makes a difference. It’s what West Philadelphia’s own Pink Sweat$ has been demonstrating while residing in the capital of country music, Nashville. Since 2020, the “At My Worst” singer has been giving back to his native city by donating over $30,000 to local organizations that provide food for the homeless. And by his account, part of what motivated him was going through those hard times himself. “At one point, I got evicted from my home. I’ve been through a lot, dealing with the music industry, so it’s always thinking, like, why were things when I was in those positions that I needed? And trying to do that,” he tells MTV News. While working on his dreamy and senti...
Haviah MIghty is wary of dark energies on her new song “Obeah”. The 2019 Polaris Prize winner is one of the most exciting voices in hip-hop today, equally comfortable with windows-down bangers and mind-bending conscious raps. With “Obeah”, she’s found a new twist on an old standard, channeling her Jamaican heritage to find an original slant on the “Watch who you surround yourself with,” song. The concept of Obeah doesn’t translate easily to outsiders, but it’s generally understood to involve a kind of magic or supernatural energy. As Mighty explained in a statement, “I’ve navigated life off the strength of my parents’ teachings, and one of those notable teachings is to be mindful of the company you keep and of those you call your friends. Being of Caribbean descent, I’ve heard many stories...
When COVID-19 production shutdowns forced many musicians to record alone for the first time, indie-pop ingenue Claud Mintz had a leg up. They began writing and releasing music in 2018 as the lead of Toast, a now-defunct lo-fi duo they formed as a college student with their best friend, producer Josh Mehling. Although they lived in the same city and attended university together, the pair recorded separately by sending instrumental tracks or half-baked song ideas back and forth. “We’ve never been able to make music in the same room,” Claud, who performs mononymously, tells MTV News over Zoom while hunkered down in Los Angeles. “If we are in the same room, we get distracted or we get embarrassed, and we just can’t do it. So it didn’t feel unusual because that’s wh...

It’s been nearly three months since Taylor Swift gave fans an essential update: She’d “recently begun re-recording my older music,” an experience that, at the time, had “already proven to be both exciting and creatively fulfilling.” We got to hear a little bit of what, say, “Love Story” might sound like if Swift were to record it now when a snippet of it appeared in a commercial for the dating site Match at the end of 2020. Now, the long wait to hear the rest of that song — as well as the first of Swift entirely re-recorded albums — is nearly over. The pop star shared a note on social media today (February 11) that her new version of Fearless, her 2008 sophomore album, is completed, and that fans should be hearing it soon. The 2021 “Lov...
This is the way the pop music world learned what a Baked Alaska is. Ariana Grande has shared a music video for her “34+35 (Remix)” featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat, and you can watch it below. The clip finds the trio of big name talents having a luxury girls lingerie night in a crazy luxe hotel. Yes, the song is all about getting raunchy with a lover, but it’s cool to just feel sexy with your fellow Hot Girls too! Especially when you can buzz down to the front desk through an intercom and order up some grub without even putting on a towel. In between lounging by the pool and taking some home video, this is exactly what Grande does. She calls up for some champagne and french fries, and then at the end of the clip is disappointed to learn the kitchen is out of Baked Alask...
The January 6th Capitol insurrection was an unholy calamafuck that resulted in an unprecedented second impeachment of Donald Trump. Those hoping to convict face an uphill battle, but if nothing else comes of it, the trial at least allowed Run the Jewels to fulfill their destiny. On February 10th, Rep. Stacey Plaskett quoted the lyrics “Truth is truth, whether denied or not,” entering the RTJ2 song “Early” into the official Congressional Record to make the case that — to summarize — Trump is guilty as fuck. Plaskett is a representative of the US Virgin Islands, and she made a bit of history herself when she became the first non-voting delegate to join a team of House impeachment managers. On February 10th, she addressed Congress and opened with a quote from Wu-Tang maestro GZA. “T...
Over three years following her Always Never Home EP, Syd has returned with a new solo song called “Missing Out”. With a dark wave of synths and a slowly crunching beat, The Internet member delivers the perfect self-actualizing anti-Valentine’s Day ballad. “As far as I can see, you and me could never be/ ‘Cause we didn’t spend the proper time tryna work it out,” Syd sings. “Hope you findin’ what you need or what you seek ’cause now I’m free.” Stream “Missing Out” below. In addition to it being nearly four years since Always Never Home and its preceding LP Fin, it’s been two and a half since The Internet dropped Hive Mind. That doesn’t mean Syd’s been silent until “Missing Out”, though; over the last year or so, she’s collaborated with The Free Nationals, Disclosure, Zayn, Lil Uzi Vert, and ...
A typical album cycle for Jimmy Eat World finds them playing about 150 shows. For their latest album, Surviving, they got in 27. They had a big summer trek all mapped out, but when touring shut down do the pandemic, what could they do? They, like everyone else, were stuck, and their fans would have to impatiently wait to hear the new material live. That opportunity finally came last month when the band launched their Phoenix Sessions concert film series (don’t call it a livestream) with a full-album performance of Surviving. Futures followed two weeks later, and this week on February 12th, they’ll close it all out with their classic Clarity. Each show came with a virtual pre-show, meet-and-greet opportunities, and exclusive merch, approximating the real concert experience as much as possib...
