Minneapolis three piece The Soviet Machines lived out an alt-rock dream when they traveled to Seattle to work with producer Jack Endino (Nirvana’s Bleach). The band is now premiering the music video for “Get Your Kicks”, the lead single from their upcoming debut album, exclusively via Heavy Consequence. The Soviet Machines’ vintage power trio approach is well suited for Endino, who captured many of the Seattle grunge scene’s legendary guitar bands. He’s got major credits on records by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, and countless others. Most recently, Endino has produced the acclaimed works of US doom institution Windhand. The veteran recording engineer’s touch is apparent on “Get Your Kicks”, an upbeat rocker with solid tone — mostly recorded live without overdubs. The S...
Mere months after dropping a new song out of nowhere, Arab Strap have returned with even bigger news. The Scottish indie rockers have just announced their first new album in 16 years. It’s called As Days Get Dark and it’s due out March 5th via Rock Action. As Days Get Dark follows Arab Strap’s great 2005 album The Last Romance, shortly after which they called it quits. This new full-length spans 11 tracks in total, including “The Turning of Our Bones”, which they dropped in September. The song was put out as a standalone number, but now we know it’s actually the album opener on As Days Get Dark, according to the tracklist. The joyful outfit, comprised of Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, released a statement to accompany the news, saying As Days Get Dark should feel like both a care...
Nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards were revealed on Tuesday, and BTS have scored themselves a big one: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Dynamite”. This marks their first music-focused Grammy nomination, and their second overall following a Best Recording Package nod in 2019 for their album Love Yourself: Tear. Additionally, it marks the first-ever performance Grammy nomination for a K-pop group. The septet — that’s J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, RM, and Suga — is set to face off against a category stacked with pop royalty. The other contenders include “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande; “UN DIA” by Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa, and J Balvin; “Intentions” from Justin Bieber and Quavo; and “Exile” by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. “Dynamite”, the lead single off new album BE, quick...
Welcome to Dissected, where we disassemble a band’s catalog, a director’s filmography, or some other critical pop-culture collection. It’s exact science by way of a few beers. This time, we follow the legendary AC/DC’s career, from their 1975 debut, High Voltage, to their most recent effort, 2020’s Power Up. The legacy of AC/DC is one of perseverance. Across their five-decade career, the Australian hard rockers have seen both sides of tragedy and glory, from their rugged ascent playing beer bars to becoming a global stadium rock institution. When charismatic frontman and lyricist Bon Scott passed away in 1980, many wondered if it was the end of AC/DC. Scott’s vivid personality was as much the face of the band as forever-a-schoolboy guitarist Angus Young. After releasing multiple soon-...
Bon Iver vs. Nicki Minaj Earlier Tuesday, the nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards were revealed. But not quite everyone is ready to start thinking about next year’s big ceremony: mere hours after today’s announcement, Nicki Minaj reminded Twitter she’s still mad about being snubbed at the 2012 Grammys. Minaj specifically dragged Bon Iver, who beat her to win the Best New Artist accolade that year. “Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation,” a still-salty Minaj tweeted this afternoon. “They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.” On the strength of sophomore album Bon Iver, Bon Iver, the Justin Vernon-led indie...
The single is dead; all hail the double single. Having already released a two-pack in September, and teaming on another from Femdot earlier this month, the hip-hop chameleon Saba has now released two new songs, “So and So” and “Areyoudown? Pt. 2” featuring fellow Chicagoan Tobi Lou. “So and So” is a laid-back ode to the flow, with the 26-year-old rapper reveling in double- and triple-rhymes based around the flexible “oh” sound. He raps, “Propose a toast ya know,” and with the way he pronounces “propose,” and “toast” that’s four “ohs” right there. He continues, “You made the most with all your highs and lows/ Stick to the code you know the same as before/ Gang la costra nostra.” The song comes with a pastoral music video that showcases Saba in what looks like the hills of Italy. He sits in ...
It was 50 years ago that Santana released their landmark sophomore album, Abraxas. The album’s half-century-long legacy is the focus of the latest season of The Opus, proudly presented by Consequence Podcast Network and Sony. To commemorate both the LP’s anniversary and the launch of The Opus’ 11th season, we’re giving you the chance to rock like Carlos Santana himself. We’re giving away one (1) SE Santana Singlecut Trem in Egyptian Gold from PRS Guitars and a copy of Abraxas on vinyl. Created in collaboration with Santana, the Singlecut Trem pays tribute to the iconic guitarist’s own instrument. In 2018, Santana heard Paul’s Guitar latest TCI pickups, and was so impressed by the tone that he requested a special set for himself minus the coil taps. Thus were the TCI “S” pickups born, ...
By Candace McDuffie After 30 years in the music industry, Juicy J is happier than ever. The legendary emcee and anchor of the rap group Three 6 Mafia is still going, celebrating the imminent release of his fifth studio album, The Hustle Continues, which features a slew of cameos from younger artists working within an industry that he shaped: Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Baby, Young Dolph, and more. He is also a shrewd businessman, with investments in Core Hydration, cannabis company Asterisk*, and Epic Games (maker of Fortnite). But perhaps his greatest personal achievement is becoming a doting husband and father, an experience he calls life-changing. “It’s great, man. It’s the best feeling in the world,” he tells MTV News. “But I ain’t gonna lie to you… it’s real-life shit. It ain’t no studio...
After Hours is the best full-length album of The Weeknd‘s career, and this year “Blinding Lights” has been about as ubiquitous as photons. Many observers expected a slew of Grammy nods for the artist born Abel Tesfaye, so when the nominations were announced earlier today, it came as a shock when he was shut out entirely. As Variety points out, there are a few possible explanations. First, perhaps The Weeknd’s representatives at Republic Records forgot to submit his music for consideration. Granted, they successfully handled Taylor Swift’s paperwork, helping her on the way to five nominations, but it’s conceivable. Another possibility is that the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing; that the R&B committee considered him pop, the pop committee figured he counted...
