Lil Uzi Vert and Future have linked up for a new two-song collaborative project called Pluto x Baby Pluto. Take a listen to “Over Your Head” and “Patek” below. The songs arrive on Lil Uzi Vert’s 26th birthday (happy birthday!), and add to what has been an already massive year for the Philadelphia rapper. Back in March, he released his long-awaited sophomore album, Eternal Atake, along with the sequel to his 2017 mixtape, Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World. Future, meanwhile, has kept up his prolific ways, even amidst a pandemic. He dropped his latest album, High Off Life, in May. Beyond his work with Lil Uzi Vert, he’s also collaborated on tracks with DaBaby, Lil Yachty, Teyana Taylor, Jhené Aiko, and the late Pop Smoke. Last week, Taylor Swift ditched her usual lengthy album rollout plan in favor of something quick and easy — and it seems to have paid off tremendously. Just seven days after its release, folklore is already the top selling album of 2020. According to a press release, the Lover follow-up reigns supreme with over two million sales worldwide. These impressive stats also cement Swift as the only female “to have seven albums each sell at least 500,000 copies in a single week.” Across the pond, folklore serves as the biggest UK debut for a female artist this year. Historically, she is the “first and only female artist in the 21st century” to score five No. 1 albums in the country. Swift’s streaming numbers are equally astounding. Globally, her new album has pulled in over half a billio...
Starcrawler’s Arrow de Wilde (photo by Kimberley Ross) and The Growlers’ Brooks Nielsen (photo by David Brendan Hall) The Growlers were at the center of the accusations recently raised against Burger Records, which ultimately led to the label shutting down. At the time, frontman Brooks Nielsen said the band was “committed to conducting ourselves in a way our mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters would be proud of.” However, it seems as recently as January the band was engaging in misconduct, as Starcrawler’s Arrow de Wilde has levied new accusations against the band. Starcrawler joined The Growlers on their 12-date Australian tour at the top of the year. When de Wilde got off stage after finishing a Melbourne show, she was covered in sweat and fake blood, a typical part of Sta...
In February 2020, Charlotte Lawrence was on fire — well, almost. The music video for her bouncy, mischievous song “Joke’s on You” found the 20-year-old singer strutting amid blazing inferno as she laid out a tale of emotional revenge. The tune soundtracked Harley Quinn’s misanthropic adventures in the Birds of Prey blockbuster film, sitting alongside killer cuts from artists like Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and more on its soundtrack. A month later, she was among the first wave of highly visible virus cases, as she announced her COVID-19 diagnosis on Instagram on March 18. “I am going to be completely fine,” she wrote in a note that scans as quaint nearly five months later. “But many who get it won’t be if too many people get sick ...
Hinds released their excellent new album The Prettiest Curse last month to help soundtrack our summer. While they were recording those songs, it turns out they were also rehearsing a cover of The Clash’s track “Spanish Bombs”. Now, they’ve released the studio version of that cover. Of course, “Spanish Bombs” comes from London Calling, The Clash’s iconic album and one of the most influential punk rock records of all time. While “Spanish Bombs” is a classic in its own right, the song has additional meaning for the members of Hinds because of its perspective on the Spanish Civil War — singer Joe Strummer was inspired to write about it after he heard about the Costa Brava hotel bombings on the radio at the time — as a piece of pop culture history. “The Clash were my mom’s forever favorite band...
Guns N’ Roses’ multi-platinum 2004 Greatest Hits compilation is set to receive its first-ever vinyl release. The double-LP set arrives September 25th. For many budding rockers in the early aughts (this writer included), Greatest Hits served as the entry point into Guns N’ Roses’ legendary discography. The tracklist spanned the band’s career at the time, and hit all the major checkpoints: the obligatory Appetite for Destruction mega-hits (“Welcome to the Jungle”, “Paradise City”, “Sweet Child ‘O Mine”), the best songs from Use Your Illusion I and II, the Lies ballad “Patience”, and even soundtrack contributions (the cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” from Interview with a Vampire). Making the vinyl version particularly collectible is the inclusion of “Shadow of Your Love”...
Bloomington, Indiana dream pop band Hoops have broken up in response to sexual abuse allegations against former member James Harris. Harris is accused of sexually assaulting a girl, identified as Megan, when she was 17 years old and he was 21. According to the accuser, Harris was also sleeping with a 15-year-old girl around the same time. The victim shared a Twitter direct message from the band’s Kevin Krauter to a friend in which he said “James himself says he doesn’t remember having sex with her on the night of the incident in question, but like understands that some action of his could have been seen as non consensual.” He also stated that “there was nothing in our awareness that we ever tried to intentionally hide or cover up.” In regards to “the second rumor,” he said the band members...
When she’s not writing songs with her pal Kehlani or collaborating with folks like Ryan Hemsworth and Pell, New Orleans singer-songwriter Ambré is making movies in her head. She builds characters and narratives in the songs she records under her own name, but it all starts with emotion. One of the biggest is love: whispering about it in the moonlight, hiding from it in school bathroom stalls, cruising with it in a nighttime car ride. She makes love its own character in her own coming-of-age story. Her debut album, Pulp, released in November 2019, undulates with gorgeous, languid R&B that she turns urgent with her lyrics. “Can I practice on you? Can you practice on me, too?” she asks on “Band Practice,” admitting, “Girl, you give me the blues....
Ask me which track off of Taylor Swift’s Folklore is my favorite, and you’ll get a different answer depending on the day (or the weather, or the amount of candles I may or may not be burning). Today, it’s “Illicit Affairs,” a slow-building ballad about a secret tryst that is both undeniably Taylor and distinctly Folklore. Prolific producer-sound engineer Jack Antonoff’s influence is there, but Swift’s poignant songwriting dazzles in its own right: “And you wanna scream, don’t call me kid / Don’t call me baby / Look at this godforsaken mess that you’ve made me / You showed me colors you know I can’t see with anyone else.” Chills, mama. Porno for Pyros are back. As promised, Perry Farrell’s ’90s supergroup came together on Thursday night as part of Lollapalooza’s Lolla2020 live stream. Farrell, drummer Stephen Perkins, guitarist Peter DiStefano, and bassist Mike Watt gathered together for an acoustic backyard performance of “Pets” and “Kimberly Austin”. The reunion marked the first time this particular lineup has performed together in over 24 years. Otherwise, the last time the Porno for Pyros moniker was dusted off was when the original lineup featuring bassist Martyn LeNoble reunited for Farrell’s 50th birthday party. Since then, Farrell has teased of getting the band back together to no avail. This isn’t the last we’ll see of Farrell. The Lollapalooza founder has two other special performances in store for the weekend:...
