Billie Eilish is closing out the month with a special summer treat for her fans. Our 2018 Rookie of the Year has announced that she will release a new single called “my future” next week on July 31st. The track marks her first new music since “No Time to Die”, her James Bond theme song from February, which somehow feels like a lifetime ago. It also follows her 2019 offering “everything i wanted”. It’s unclear whether “my future” is a standalone release or taken from a larger project. We haven’t heard much in the way of a new record, the follow-up to debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, but it’s not as though the 18-year-old pop star has been idle. She and her father recently launched their own radio show on Apple Music, and Eilish performed a quarantine-style concert ...

Taylor Swift, folkie of the woods, is here. The artist dropped her wonderfully stripped-back, bright yet smoldering eighth album Folklore at midnight on Friday (July 24), featuring a treasure trove of indie-folk flourishes courtesy of The National’s Aaron Dessner, who co-wrote most of the album with Swift; his brother, Bryce, who handled some orchestration; and a slew of other notable collaborators, including Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and trusted pal Jack Antonoff. But none of it would work if it wasn’t for Swift herself, who’s written some of the most affecting, drivingly narrative, and endearing songs of her catalog for Folklore, an album she ostensibly wrote and recorded in quarantine. That searing, crackling personality comes through in the lovely “Cardigan...
Less than a year after Taylor Swift blessed us with her seventh studio album, Lover, the superstar songstress is back to save 2020 with the surprise release of a new album. Folklore, out today (July 24), gave Swifties less than 24 hours of notice from announcement until release, throwing a major wrench in whatever plans they thought they had this weekend. The album’s first single “Cardigan” debuted alongside with a mystical music video that shows where Swift’s head is now. While Lover gave us plenty of bright colors, pink glitter, and various meanings of love, Folklore evokes a whole new mood of gray skies, woodland scenes, and soothing indie-pop melodies filled with beautifully detailed stories Swift has carefully crafted in her mind. “Cardigan” breaks your heart, conveying fe...
San Francisco punk band Culture Abuse have broken up in light of singer David Kelling admitting to sexual misconduct with an underaged girl. In a statement on Instagram, the other members of Culture Abuse emphasized that “the victim is our first priority.” Before sharing the anonymous individual’s full account of Kelling’s actions, with her consent, the band noted, “However we do not want [our breakup] to be the focus of this story, as survivors come forward, we commend their bravery and absolutely need to respect and listen to them. We are well aware that this does not fix the pain caused but we are hoping it’s a first step. There are no excuses for this behavior and it cannot be allowed.” They went on to say they would disassociate from Kelling, but urged him to “seek therapy to unlearn ...
Next week, jazz drummer and producer Makaya McCraven will release a new album called Universal Beings E&F Sides. A companion piece to his widely acclaimed Universal Beings record from 2018, this upcoming collection features 14 “new pieces of organic beat music” that were cut from those original studio sessions. Earlier this month brought lead single “Mak Attack”, which saw McCraven adroitly “attacking” his kit like the percussion virtuoso that he is. Today, the Chicago native returns with another rattling offering in “Beat Science”. As indicated by its title, here he experiments with a range of thumps and thuds, some wispy and casual, others pointed and moving at breakneck speed. To coincide with the new song, McCraven is also sharing “Do It Live”, another video installment from his on...
Last time we spoke to Jenny Lewis about Rilo Kiley’s 20th anniversary, she seemed a bit shocked at how much time had passed. Now, we’re feeling the same way. That’s because today, the beloved emo-goes-indie pop group have announced they’re reissuing Rilo Kiley, their self-titled debut album from 1999, on October 2nd via Little Record Company. Rilo Kiley originally formed back in 1998 in Los Angeles as a four piece featuring Lewis, Blake Sennett, Pierre de Reeder, and Dave Rock. After writing a handful of original songs and rehearsing regularly, they booked their first show at the Silverlake venue Spaceland. As it turns out, comedian Dave Foley was in the crowd that night and fell head over heels for their music — so much so that he wound up funding the band’s very first demo session and, i...
