The year 2000 looms large in pop culture history: the Y2k non-scare, the Seinfeld “Newmannium” episode, the “In the Year 2000″ sketch from Conan O’Brien’s original late-night show, the Hulu series PEN15. And just like, say, the grunge-defined 1991, the year immediately conjures specific sounds: gleaming teen-pop, earnest radio rock, the Neptunes and Timbaland. There’s never a bad time to revisit this music. But in the middle of a pandemic, with America on the verge of collapse, it feels extra comforting — a blast of nostalgia for a time when you could safely exit your home, visit your local mall’s Sam Goody and buy Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” CD single. For this list, our only criteria was that the songs appear on albums or soundtracks released in 2000. Here we go. 50. Papa Roach, “Last Reso...

The St. Louis native performed the project from the intro to the outro for his die-hard fans. On Saturday (June 25), the Grammy Award-winning Hip-Hop icon performed the entirety of his hit debut album Country Grammar for the first time ever exclusively on the virtual reality platform MelodyVR. The rapper born Cornell Haynes was backed by a live band as he took everyone back to when he single-handedly put Missouri on the Rap map. “To be [celebrating] the 20th anniversary of one of the few diamond-selling albums in all of Hip-Hop is crazy, because the game has changed so much,” he said. “We gonna run this from top to bottom.” Nelly opened th...
Source: Manny Hernandez / Getty When Andre 3000 said “the South has something to say” it would be prophetic in so many ways. T.I. is campaigning hard for all the talent from below the Mason Dixie line. As spotted on HipHopDX the “Swagger Like Us” rapper is being very vocal to what he perceives is unfair advantage East Coast rappers have over the rest of the map. Last week he called up Kevin Hart to negotiate a Verzuz between he and 50 Cent. Unfortunately, Curtis did not feel he was on his level and went on to quickly deny the challenge. Since the dismissal, Tip has voiced his concern about how New York rappers get precedence when it comes to how their legacies are ranked. In a recent interview with HOT 97, he detailed his frustrations with Ebro Darden and Peter Rosenberg. “N...

Source: Mindy Small / Getty The #Verzuz battle series keeps getting better and better. Earlier this week after a legendary showdown between Ludacris and Nelly, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland announced that they were easing the stress from quarantine by taking the showdown to the islands with a monstrous battle between Dancehall icons Bounty Killer and Beenie Man–but the duo stepped it up even bigger with a battle for the ladies between 112 and Jagged Edge, making this the biggest weekend for the online series. “I was going to take Saturday off,” Swizz said. “But I’m getting a lot of pushback from the artists and the audience to keep it going, especially since it’s a long holiday weekend and everyone is stuck indoors. So I said, ‘I’d better tell Tim we’re going to work this weekend.” Saturday wi...
Source: photo: WENN Even though Ludacris came out victorious from his recent battle with Nelly he did leave some folks scratching their head. He is now explaining why the Pied Piper of Pee Pee was referenced on a new track. The “Southern Hospitality” rapper turned some heads during his Verzuz last week. During the tail end of the stream he played two unreleased tracks from his forthcoming project with Timbaland. Titled “Silence Of The Lambs”, which was debuted first, featured Lil Wayne and some questionable bars from ‘Cris. “I love R. Kelly but around my daughters, I’m not comfortable” he rapped. Naturally that caused many Hip-Hop fans to raise an eyebrow considering the singer’s sordid history. In an interview with Atlanta radio station V103 FM, Big Tigger got him to explain his stance. “...
