Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 Gives Aaron Sorkin a Timely Bully Pulpit: Review

The Pitch: In 1968, a coalition of anti-Vietnam War and counterculture protestors took to the streets in Chicago to protest outside the Democratic National Convention, rallying to end the Vietnam War and bring our boys back home. Predictably, the police retaliated with overwhelming force, greeting them with beatings, tear gas, and scores of arrests. Five scant months later, one of the most infamous trials in American history took place, charging seven of the organizers with conspiracy and incitement to riot — YIPpies Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen) and Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong), Mobe leaders Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne) and Rennie Davis (Alex Sharp), David Dellinger (John Carroll Lynch), John Froines (Danie Flaherty) and Lee Weiner (Noah Robbins). Black Panther Bobby Seale (Yahya A...

Netflix is bringing some much-needed family frights this Halloween with A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting. Today, the streaming giant let loose its first trailer ahead of its October 15th premiere, offering a spooky sneak-peek at the YA misadventures. Based on Joe Ballarini’s popular YA series, the film follows a high school freshman (Tamara Smart), who winds up being recruited by an international secret society of babysitters who protect kids with special powers from monsters. David Letterman Details New Season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Dave Chappelle and David Letterman on Season 3 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction Pull up a chair because David Letterman’s Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is returning next month for its third season. Set to premiere October 21st, the new season will feature only four episodes — down from the usual six — but the expected star power should more than make up for the abbreviated run. Letterman is set to conduct illuminating hour-long interviews with Kim Kardashian and Dave Chappelle, as well as with Robert Downey Jr., and Lizzo. Season 1 of the Emmy-nominated TV series hosted prominent folks like former president Barack Obama, JAY-Z, and George Clooney. In our review of that season, we praised Letterman for revealing a “different side of himself,” one that’s “m...

What’s Coming to Netflix in October 2020

Netflix is bringing both the chills and the originals in October 2020. When it comes to tricks and treats, the candy is overflowing: Mike Flanagan’s new miniseries The Haunting of Bly Manor, Adam Sandler’s kooky new comedy Hubie Halloween, Ben Wheatley’s reimagining of Rebecca, and more Unsolved Mysteries. In terms of creepy-less originals, this isn’t any handful of pennies: Aaron Sorkin’s start-studded historical drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, the new music series Song Exploder, a BLACKPINK documentary, and more David Letterman. There’s also the final season of Schitt’s Creek, ParaNorman for some family Fall fun, and plenty of adult thrillers for late at night — you know, like Along Came a Spider, Basic Instinct, Cape Fear, Fargo, and In a Valley of Violence. Oh, and don...

Netflix Cancels The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Right After It Wins an Emmy

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is kaput over at Netflix. As i09 reports, the streaming giant has canceled the fantasy puppet drama after only a single season and after it won Outstanding Children’s Program at the Creative Emmys. “We are grateful to the master artists at The Jim Henson Company for bringing The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance to life for fans around the world,” a Netflix spokesperson shared. “We’re thankful to the executive producers Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford, and Louis Leterrier, who also directed all episodes, as well as the writers, cast and crew for their outstanding work and thrilled they were recognized with the Emmy this weekend.” It’s admittedly a surprise. The prequel series to the 1982 classic premiered last August to critical acclaim. Our own Clint Worth...

Final Season of Schitt’s Creek Coming to Netflix in October

It’s a week of all the best news for Schitt’s Creek and its fans. Less than 24 hours after the modern comedy classic completed a history-making sweep of the Emmys, we at last know when the show’s sixth and final season will be hitting Netflix: October 7th. Schitt’s Creek originally ran on Canada’s CBC Television beginning in 2015, but the only way to watch it in the US was on the Pop TV pay channel or buying seasons on Amazon. It wasn’t until the Netflix began hosting past seasons in 2017 that the series entered the US cultural consciousness, leading to a huge spike in popularity. That popularity culminated in a string of historic wins at Sunday night’s 2020 Emmy Awards. Schitt’s Creek took home every single award in the comedy series categories — the first time the feat has ever been acco...

The Song Exploder Podcast Is Becoming a Netflix Series

Hrishikesh Hirway’s popular podcast Song Exploder has been adapted into a new Netflix series by Hirway and documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville. The show will investigate the creative process one song at a time, and it’s available beginning October 2nd. Upon the launch of Song Exploder in 2014, Hirway carved out a niche by restricting his interviews to a single individual song. In the process, he’s unearthed stories of inspiration, frustration, and triumph which have now been downloaded over 60 million times. The Netflix adaptation adds a visual dimension to the same conceit while retaining Hirway as host. Season 1 features Alicia Keys talking about “3 Hour Drive”, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s perspective on the Hamilton tune “Wait for It”, R.E.M.‘s memories of the career-altering t...

Dave Chappelle Unloads on Critics Upon Winning Emmy for Best Variety Special

During the fourth and final night of the Creative Emmy Awards on Saturday, Dave Chappelle captured the prize for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). Despite being one of the most accomplished comedians of all time, Chappelle felt particularly vindicated by the award, as it came in honor of his divisive 2019 Netflix special Sticks & Stones. Upon the special’s release last summer, Chappelle was met with immense backlash over jokes he made about Michael Jackson and R Kelly’s alleged sexual abuse victims and the LGBTQ+ community. While Chapelle has long been known to push the envelope, the consensus among many critics was that the material featured in Sticks & Stones was stale and tone-death. “Edgy, but empty, Sticks & Stones might not break any bones, but it won’...
