Nandi Bushell, the self-declared “total metalhead” and vanquisher of Dave Grohl, has opened 2021 by expanding her rock horizons. The musical prodigy has started exploring the ’90s Britpop era, leading her to deliver a new cover of Blur’s classic “Song 2”. “This week I have been learning about #Britpop, the 90’s and about this awesome battle between 2 bands called @blurofficial and @oasis,” Bushell wrote in the YouTube video’s description. “The 90 seemed like a fun time for music. This is Song 2 by Blur its really fun to jam to! Wahoo!!! Loving this song.” Wearing a self-made Union Jack dress and a custom guitar strap from LK Straps, the young virtuoso jammed out the iconic riff while backing herself up on… well, on everything, because she’s incredible. She even layers her vocals four times...
Foo Fighters are ringing in the New Year on a bright note. The group shared “No Son of Mine,” the second single off their upcoming album, Medicine at Midnight. The song slightly veers off the path Dave Grohl outlined in early 2020 when he compared the band’s 10th studio album to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. Opening with a crunchy, hard rock riff, “No Son of Mine” is less experimental than “Shame Shame” and more akin to the straightforward rockin’ that Foos fans are accustomed to. “This is the kind of song that just resides in all of us and if it makes sense at the time, we let it out,” Grohl says of the song. “Lyrically it’s meant to poke at the hypocrisy of self righteous leaders, people that are guilty of committing the crimes they’re supposedly against…” Listen to the song below. Some people think Michael Angelakos isn’t real — that he’s actually just your parents dressed in a loose necktie and curly brown wig. But somebody matching the description of the Passion Pit frontman has quietly dropped dozens of gifts on his SoundCloud page, with copious demos of unreleased songs and alternate favorites suddenly appearing under the digital tree. Passion Pit have been taking things easy since the release of Tremendous Sea of Love in 2017. But a SoundCloud deluge began 10 days ago and has continued with fits and starts through today, December 27th. As of this writing, the haul totals 39 tracks spanning Christmas standards, electronic jams, live performances, and “redux” remixes from P.P.’s catalogue. In a comment, Angelakos wrote that the space was for “previewing unre...
Typically, when jam bands figure out that fans are making unofficial bootlegs of their live shows, they look the other way. But King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have introduced a different approach: they’re not only granting fans the go-ahead to bootleg, but also giving them all of the tools to do so. The Australian psych-rock crew has just launched a new portion of their website called “Bootlegger” where they’ve uploaded the master recordings of nine albums and are encouraging anyone who’s interested to re-release them however they see fit. Most of the records are live albums and demo comps that they’ve released on their Bandcamp throughout the year, but there’s also a new rarities album called Teenage Gizzard and their 2017 full-length Polygondwanaland, which they initia...
Kelsey Lu and Yves Tumor have teamed up for a new song called “let all the poisons that lurk in the mud seep out”. It’s a murky experimental track that also features contributions from Kelly Moran and Moses Boyd. Lu’s 2019 album Blood and Tumor’s 2020 opus Heaven to a Tortured Mind are quite different in many ways, but they share a low-lit ambiance and a sense of cathedral-like beauty. On this collaborative single, both of their steamy falsettos sound part of the same whole, blending and swirling around one another over woozy piano lines. Eventually, some congas and electronic production enter the fray, and the track concludes with a tastefully busy arrangement. Take a listen to the full tune below. In a statement, Lu described the intense emotions the song is...
On Christmas Day, Deftones singer Chino Moreno’s electrorock side project ††† (Crosses), which also features guitarist Shaun Lopez, released their first new song in six years. It wasn’t an original, but rather a cover of “The Beginning of the End” by the ’90s electropop band Cause & Effect. Listen to the song below. [embedded content] The cover caps a mixed bag of a year for Moreno. Deftones were slated to go on a lengthy tour this year, but that was pushed due to the pandemic. However, the band’s seminal White Pony turned 20 this year, and we spoke with a bunch of the band’s friends and admirers about the importance of the record. The group also released a remix album of White Pony titled Black Stallion where their pals remixed the songs from th...
Deftones singer Chino Moreno has resurrected ✞✞✞ (Crosses) and released the first new track from the project in six years. It comes in the form of a cover of Cause & Effect’s “The Beginning of the End”. Crosses unleashed their self-titled debut album in 2014, but hasn’t released any new music or performed any shows since that year. The band’s lineup is comprised of Moreno, guitarist Shaun Lopez, and bassist Chuck Doom, although a press release for the new single only mentions Moreno and Lopez. For Crosses’ return, Moreno turned to a song by fellow Sacramento act Cause & Effect, an electropop band who released their self-titled debut album in 1990. “The Beginning of the End” is a track from that first LP, and it gives off some very strong Depeche Mode vibes. Crosses’ version do...
Lil Durk has released a new album called The Voice. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. This 16-track effort marks Lil Durk’s second full-length of 2020, coming just a few months after Just Cause Y’all Waited 2. As indicated by the cover artwork, The Voice is dedicated to fellow Chicago rapper King Von, who was fatally shot outside of an Atlanta nightclub in November. King Von also appears posthumously on a track called “Still Trappin’”. Additionally, in the video for “Backdoor”, Durk can be seen wearing King Von’s O’Block chain. The Voice also features previous singles like “Stay Down” (featuring Young Thug and 6LACK) and the title track. Outside of his new album, Lil Durk has spent the last 12 months collaborating with Drake on “Laugh Now Cry Later...
Merry Christmas! Playboi Carti has just released Whole Lotta Red, his long-awaited sophomore album. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify. The arrival of Whole Lotta Red today couldn’t be more of a worthwhile gift. The Atlanta rapper has been working on the follow-up to his 2018 smash hit Die Lit for over two years now. Carti revealed the album’s title back in August 2018, hinted at various details throughout 2019, and announced the release date earlier this week on Monday. And now, on Christmas day, it’s finally here. As previously hinted at, Whole Lotta Red includes Carti’s chart-topping, unconventional single “@ MEH”, which he released back in April of this year. Other notable tracks include “Go2DaMoon” featuring Kanye West, “M3tamorphosis” featuring Kid Cudi, and “Teen X” featurin...
Eddie Vedder released the two-song single “Matter of Time” b/w “Say Hi” back in November. Now, the Pearl Jam frontman has expanded the bundle into what’s essentially a brand new EP, featuring a quartet of acoustic at-home performances, all of which were recorded throughout 2020. Highlighting the collection is a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. classic “Growin’ Up”. Also present is Vedder’s rendition of “Future Days” recorded for the 2020 Game Awards. (The Lightning Bolt cut soundtracks a particularly powerful moment in The Last of Us Part II.) Rounding out the tracklist are solo versions of “Porch” and “Just Breathe”, both captured for an online Amazon corporate event back in October. Vedder debuted “Matter of Time” and “Say Hi” during the Ventur...
Few artists have made better use of 2020 than Gorillaz have. The virtual band released an album and an almanac, performed special livestream sets, dropped vinyl figurines, and visualized their Song Machine series with nine “episodes” (read: music videos). Today, they’re putting a bow on their busy year by sharing Song Machine’s season 1 finale: a music video — err, episode — for their song “The Lost Chord” featuring Leee John. For this one, the gang — 2D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel — return to Plastic Beach, the setting of their 2010 album. Unfortunately, their visit is short-lived, as a sea monster portrayed by Leee John emerges from the depths of the ocean and destroys Gorillaz’s former seaside home. Take in Jamie Hewlett’s full visual experience below. Perceptive fan...
Well, here’s the strangest gift to ever pop out of an advent calendar. Jenny Lewis and Bill Murray have shared a live-from-home cover of Drake’s “Laugh Now Cry Later”. Seemingly delivered to capture the quarantine vibes of Christmas 2020, Lewis and Murray’s rendition of the Lil Durk-featuring track is downtempo dirge. The former sings as she plucks a heavy bass line, while the On the Rocks actor shuffles out a sloppy drum phrase. “It’s almost christmas!” Lewis wrote in the Instagram post sharing the video. “laugh now cry later.” Check out the duo’s Drake cover below. The Xmas treat is something of a reunion for the pair, who last got in the holiday spirit together for 2015’s A Very Murray Christmas special. Editors’ Picks Lewis also recently reunited with The Postal Service for a fun...
