Sturgill Simpson Releases First-Ever Bluegrass Album Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1: Stream

Modern country songwriter Sturgill Simpson has released his first-ever bluegrass album, Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 — The Butcher Shoppe Sessions. It’s streaming in full below via Apple Music or Spotify. His fifth studio effort to date, it sees Simpson reinterpreting his own music in the style of bluegrass. The jam-packed project consists of 20 tracks pulled from across his discography, including Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (2014) and A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (2016). The Grammy winner skipped reworking any music from 2019’s Sound & Fury, which makes sense given that it’s a more experimental record with harder rock and electronic influences. Luckily, there’s plenty of his classic disaffected country songs that lend themselves wonderfully to solo bluegrass sessions, like “Breakers Roar”...

Local Natives will return next week with a new EP titled Sour Lemon. Out through Loma Vista Recordings, it’s being teased today with the almost-title track “Lemon”, a collaboration with Sharon Van Etten. The upcoming EP comes a little over a year after Local Natives’ 2019 album, Violet Street. In a statement, the California indie rockers talked about how the effort’s four tracks materialized in their own time, and separate from a proper album cycle. “There’s something freeing about writing without the goal of an album in mind. It feels like waking up for class only to realize that it’s Saturday and you can sleep in as long as you want,” they remarked. “The songs on Sour Lemon each have their own long histories but they all finally decided to arrive at the same time. Rather than waitin...

Local Natives Share New Single With Sharon Van Etten, Announce EP

Local Natives have shared a new collaboration with Sharon Van Etten, and its timing is quite good. “Lemon,” out now, tackles themes of longing for connection in a world of isolation, something most listeners can get behind right now. And its gentle acoustic instrumental and duet-style delivery mesh well with the Kenny Laubbacher-directed video, which takes place at the L.A. River.  “From the time we started writing to recording to shooting the video, I have moved to L.A., Taylor [Rice] had a child who is now 10 1/2 months, and Ryan is now engaged,” Van Etten said in a statement. “I connected with the song at each stage: collaborating and getting to know each other, receiving their openness and generosity, recording the song and feeling the camaraderie and accepted as a part ...

Lana Del Rey Shares Piano Ballad ‘Let Me Love You Like a Woman’

After a month of teasing her next single, Lana Del Rey has officially released the piano-laced track “Let Me Love You Like a Woman.” The single is Del Rey’s first from her upcoming album, Chemtrails Over the Country Club, which she originally announced back in May. It features Del Rey’s classic vocal layering over delicate piano chords, feeling almost like it could’ve been a cut from 2019’s Norman Fucking Rockwell. And, as any Del Rey song should, it shows the artist flexing her pen, too, fresh off the release of her poetry book. (Let me be who I’m meant to be/Talk to me in songs and poems/Don’t make me be bittersweet/Let me love you like a woman). Earlier this month, Del Rey surprised fans with a Los Angeles book signing for Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass. The singer-turne...

Felicia Douglass of Dirty Projectors (photo by Jason Frank Rothenberg) and Chromeo (photo by Heather Kaplan) In May, the Dirty Projectors released the perfectly effervescent new single “Lose Your Love”, fronted by keyboardist and percussionist Felicia Douglass. That little slice of heaven has already attracted one remix from Jimmy “The Senator” Douglass, a Grammy-winning producer who also happens to be Felicia’s father. Now, electro-funk duo Chromeo have dropped remix number two, giving the track their own disco-ball spin. The original “Lose Your Love” used warm synths and whimsical, chipmunk-soul samples to put some bounce in your step. In contrast, the Chromeo remix finds a harder, sweatier approach, the better for dancing all night. In Club Chromeo, the strutting bass line holds the flo...
