Maximo Park have released their first song in nearly four years. “Child of the Flatlands” “is an affectionate look at both the psychic and physical edgelands of the town where I grew up, punctuated by snapshots of modern Britain as viewed from a distant hillside,” Paul Smith said in a statement. He added, “It’s about the inevitability of nature (in all senses of the word) over the order we try to impose on it. The quiet, melancholy choruses lament the loss of community spaces for marginalised people, and the overall pace is meant to evoke a long walk, collaging found sound, strings and insistent piano to create a mildly psychedelic pop odyssey.” The band worked with Greg Hodgson to create a video that not only transports you to the time of analog. “We commissioned Greg Hodgson to reflect t...

Future Islands’ dropped their latest single “Moonlight” Tuesday with a star-studded music video — featuring Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler and La La Land’s Callie Hernandez. The visual finds the two romantically involved, matching the warmness of the mellow, bass-thumping four-minute track. “’Moonlight’ is a song about love in a depressive state,” lead singer Samuel T. Herring says. “It’s about recognizing the holes in ourselves and recognizing the circular whole of others. ‘Moonlight’ is about acceptance because that’s what love allows us all.“ The track is the third release from the group’s upcoming Oct. 9 album As Long As You Are, following previously released singles “Thrill” and “For Sure.” The group co-produced the record with engineer Steve Wright ...
Last week, The Avalanches formally announced the title of their new album, We Will Always Love You. Now, the Australian electronic music outfit has landed on December 11th for the release date, as well as shared two new singles off the record. First up is “Take Care in Your Dreaming”, a collaboration with rapper Denzel Curry, trip-hop artist Tricky, and Melbourne rapper-singer Sampa the Great. With the help of their trio of guests, The Avalanches ponder life’s surprise twists and turns and countless what-ifs. The second offering is called “Music Makes Me High”, and its euphoric disco-funk glow is said to be inspired by The Whispers’ “And the Beat Goes On” and Stardusts’ “Music Feels Better with You”. Although no prominent names pop up, a gospel choir lends its heavenly vocals throughout. E...
Next month, The Mountain Goats will drop their second album of the year, Getting Into Knives. A first preview came via “As Many Candles As Possible”, which featured contributions from Al Green’s own organist Charles Hodges. The indie outfit is now sharing another single in “Get Famous”. While most wish for popularity and success, The Mountain Goats are making us seriously reconsider these lofty dreams. The new song encourages listeners to follow their ambitions, but paints fame as something not at all worth coveting. Or as a press release succinctly puts it, frontman John Darnielle sings the title “as if it were a curse.” “Cold, grey world/ All these obedient sheep/ They act like they know, but they’re all sound asleep/ You arrive on the scene like a message from God/ Listen to the people ...
For some, fame isn’t everything. The Mountain Goats latest single, “Get Famous,” is a prime example as to why. On the track that was released on Monday, lead singer John Darnielle sings of fame as something that maybe isn’t the ideal scenario. “Light up the sky like a comet/Make yourself want to vomit/Shine like a cursed star/Show everybody exactly who you are,” he sings over the horn-heavy soulful cut. the day I wrote this song I knew the wait to share it would be excruciating AND IT HAS BEEN but today! is! the! day! across all platforms right now! Get Famous! https://t.co/8wxRpxf9h4 — The Mountain Goats (@mountain_goats) September 14, 2020 The indie veterans — which consists of Darnielle, Matt Douglas, Peter Hughes, and Jon Wurster — explore fame and plenty of other themes on t...
Australian group the Avalanches are back, and they’ve brought some talented peers with them. On Monday, the electronic group announced that their long-awaited record, We Will Always Love You, is set to drop on Dec. 11. Along with the announcement, the Avalanches shared two new singles from the project: “Music Makes Me High” and “Take Care in Your Dreaming,” the latter featuring Denzel Curry, Tricky and Sampa The Great. “Music Makes Me High” is a sweet, atmospheric reminder of what it felt like to be in a club with a gospel choir leading the way, while “Take Care in Your Dreaming” is a piano-backed, auto-tuned journey in itself. The record announcement follows the release of tracks like the Blood Orange-featuring “We Will Always Love You” and “Running Red Lights” with Rivers Cuomo and ...
After Nandi Bushell not only challenged Dave Grohl to a drum battle but also beat him by matching the Foo Fighters frontman beat-for-beat, Grohl is back with the next round in the ongoing competition. “OK Nandi, you got me,” Grohl said sitting in front of his drum kit. “You win round one, but I’ve got something special for you. Something you’ve never heard before. Something I’ve never heard before because I’m about to write this off the top of my head for you.” Aside from composing a brand-new drum solo, he also penned an epic theme song for the 10-year-old drumming wunderkind. Grohl also enlisted his daughters — Violet, Ophelia and Harper — to sing backup. “She got the power/ She got the soul/ Gonna save the world with her rock and roll!” he sings on the new track. Bushell and Grohl ...
Eddie Vedder has just shared his new single, “Cartography.” But what makes this particular song a little extra special is that he’s released not one, but two versions of the track. “Cartography (Nick Zinner RFK remix)” is the Pearl Jam leader’s contribution to Sub Pop Singles Club Vol. 5,” and proceeds from the song will be donated to Fair Fight, which pushes “to ensure a free, fair and secure election in 2020″ — a cause Pearl Jam have been fighting for some time now. The new version of “Cartography” features “spoken word” in the form of a speech from Democratic senator Robert F. Kennedy. “Listening to the speech delivered by Bobby Kennedy in regards to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. 50 years ago,” Vedder said in a statement, “you are reminded that once again we are at a momen...
Baltimore outfit War on Women have announced their third full-length album, Wonderful Hell, will arrive on October 30th. The politically charged hardcore band have also shared the LP’s ferocious title track. War on Women make no mistake about their views on modern society or the state of politics in the United States. Their songs read like a manifesto, and “Wonderful Hell” is no different. Singer Shawna Potter wrote the song during a period when she felt especially “exhausted and overwhelmed by the Trump era.” “I can’t ignore what’s in front of me/ That fear is real, but not the enemy,” shouts Potter. In the lyric video, there is a notebook emblazoned with the hashtag “#VOTE”. It’s at the core message of the song. “I think it expresses something that a lot of people are feeling,” Potter sa...
Ehab Omran of Columbus’ South of Eden has long admired Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine. However, the Jordan-born, Ohio-raised singer only learned about “this crazy band called Audioslave” in 2012. He recalls hearing the group’s song “Show Me How to Live” for the first time while in high school and being flabbergasted by their spirited chemistry. “I fell in love with it instantly,” he recalls. “It’s a very heavy riff, but it grooves at the same time, and that’s why I think Tom Morello is a god for doing all the things he does on the electric guitar. And obviously Chris Cornell is nothing to pass over at all, may he rest in peace.” So when he and South of Eden were looking for a song to cover, the decision was easy. The video for their version of “Show Me How to Love” premieres toda...
