Seven long years after its initial release, The Weeknd’s Kiss Land reached the top of the charts this week. In honor of the surprise achievement, the R&B singer has now dug up “a few songs and ideas that didn’t” end up making the final tracklist of that 2013 album. Abel Tesfaye shared these previously unreleased songs and outtakes during episode 9 of his “Memento Mori” radio show on Apple Music on Friday. He called the reveal a “special thank you episode to the fans for showing so much love to kiss land this week.” Amongst the demos and alternate versions is a remix of Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence cut “Money Power Glory”, as well as a demo of “One of Those Nights”, a track which appeared on a deluxe edition of Juicy J’s 2013 album Stay Trippy. Other demos include “Angel Face”, “For You...
Remember back when Nickelback were wanted by police for “crimes against music”? Almost banned from performing in London? The Canadian natives have come a long way since then, thanks in large part to their willingness to be the butt of everyone’s jokes. (Lots of rock bands still have very fragile egos, in case you didn’t see the latest Trapt news.) Nowadays Nickelback have the support of the American people, Congress, and even Smashing Pumpkins’ own Billy Corgan, who once called frontman Chad Kroeger an “incredible songwriter.” It also helps that the group recently publicly slammed Donald Trump for copyright infringement after he tried to use Nickelback in a meme on Twitter. The tides have turned so much, in fact, that we actually welcome Nickelback’s latest music release, a cover of the Ch...
Dolly Parton (CTK Management), Lzzy Hale (Jimmy Fontaine), Whitney Houston (from The Bodyguard) Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale has one of the strongest voices in hard rock, and she shows off her pipes on a newly released cover of the Dolly Parton / Whitney Houston classic “I Will Always Love You”. The song appears on Halestorm’s new six-song Reimagined EP, which also features re-worked versions five of the band’s previous singles. A couple weeks ago, Halestorm released a new version of “Break In” featuring Lzzy duetting with Amy Lee from Evanescence. Lzzy has performed “I Will Always Love You” at select Halestorm concerts in the past, but this marks the first studio recording of her cover. While Dolly Parton wrote and originally recorded the heart-wrenching ballad in the ’70s, Lzzy’s rendi...
Atlanta rap duo EarthGang make inventive, absurdist hip-hop songs that are not too dissimilar from the kind that fellow locals Outkast created. Now, like André 3000 and Big Boi before them, Olu and WowGr8 will contribute to the Madden video game franchise, as their new song “Powered Up” will be included on the Madden NFL 21 soundtrack. Madden NFL is the longest-running video game franchise in EA SPORTS’ history, and the company makes sure the soundtracks to these games are loaded with energetic songs to give you an extra boost to charge onwards. As the title suggests, “Powered Up” is perfectly designed to energize you as you pound the digital gridiron. The track distorts a squiggly synth line into a weird hook for EarthGang to rap atop. In the background, there’s lots of hazy electron...
Today brings the release of a new David Bowie live album. Entitled Something in the Air (Live Paris 99), the 15-track LP captures an October 14th, 1999 performance at the Elysée Montmarte in Paris, France. The concert was notable for a number of reasons. To start, it occurred on the same day Bowie was awarded the Commandeurs of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France’s highest artistic honor. It was also one of only seven shows performed in support of Bowie’s 1999 album, Hours. As for the setlist, it saw Bowie dig deep into his back catalog and dust off several songs he hadn’t played in decades, including “Can’t Help Thinking About Me”, “Word on a Wing”, and “Drive-In Saturday”. The concert also featured the live debut of Bowie’s Hours track “Something in the Air...

Snoop Dogg is celebrating Nipsey Hussle’s birthday with a new dedication track, “Nipsey Blue.” The late rapper would have turned 35 tomorrow (Aug. 15). Sampling Dorothy Moore’s 1975 hit version of Bob Montgomery-penned track “Misty Blue,” Snoop goes into full-on melodic mode and sings along with what sounds like Moore. If you listen blues singer’s original version, Snoop stays true to the song and doesn’t really change many of the words — except for the obvious “Misty” for “Nipsey.” Snoop teased the track on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 13) with a social post showing a gif of the LA rapper pour one out for Nipsey at a previous concert. The rappers worked on a number of tracks together including “The Life,” “Upside Down,” “Ice Cream Paint Job (West Coast Remix),” “Snitches Ain’t…,” “Californica...
