Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda has unveiled a second album that he created with input from fans on Twitch. Dropped Frames Vol. 2 comes just three weeks after the release of Vol. 1. As previously reported, Dropped Frames Vol. 1 featured Shinoda collaborating with his fans on Twitch. In fact, one of the songs, “Open Door”, incorporated vocals from seven of his Twitch followers. Dropped Frames Vol. 2, released today (July 31st), is a mostly instrumental effort. As a press release states, “The 12-song set has an emphasis on digital samples and classic game themes, featuring everything from Nintendo Game Boy sounds to ’80s synth, and even a toy drum loop pulled from Money Mark’s Instagram page.” During the pandemic, Shinoda held regular livestreams on Twitch during weekdays, committing to creating ...

Veteran songwriter and producer Róisín Murphy has announced her first album in over four years. Dubbed Róisín Machine, it’s slated for arrival on September 25th through Skint/BMG. Consisting of 10 songs, the new effort follows up on 2016’s Take Her Up To Monto and the 2015 Mercury Prize-nominated Hairless Toys. Like much of her past output, the LP continues Murphy’s creative partnership with longtime collaborator Crooked Man, aka DJ Parrot, and features varying shades of disco and funk. Our initial peek at Murphy’s Machine comes in the form of “Something More”, which was written by New York City-based musician Amy Douglas. “We met last year at a very interesting talk event in london about the psychology and science of Dub,” Murphy recalled in a statement. “We hit it off imme...

Peaches Gets Funky on Cover of T. Rex’s “Solid Gold, Easy Action”: Stream

T. Rex’s Marc Bolan (photo via Ian Dickson:Wikipedia) and Peaches (photo by Philip Cosores) There’s a massive tribute album coming out this September that sees everyone from U2 to Father John Misty covering the music of Marc Bolan and T. Rex. The latest artist to share their contribution to the compilation is Peaches, whose cover of the 1972 T. Rex single “Solid Gold, Easy Action” is as big as it is fun. So far, the songs we’ve heard from the tribute album, dubbed AngelHeaded Hipster, have been pretty imaginative thanks to artists like Joan Jett, Kesha, and The Sword. But Peaches puts her own unique spin on her cover while still remaining pretty faithful to the original track. According to a press release, that’s in part due to Hal Willner, the album’s producer and a longtime pa...

Lil Uzi Vert and Future Reconnect on “Over Your Head” and “Patek”: Stream

Lil Uzi Vert and Future have linked up for a new two-song collaborative project called Pluto x Baby Pluto. Take a listen to “Over Your Head” and “Patek” below. The songs arrive on Lil Uzi Vert’s 26th birthday (happy birthday!), and add to what has been an already massive year for the Philadelphia rapper. Back in March, he released his long-awaited sophomore album, Eternal Atake, along with the sequel to his 2017 mixtape, Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World. Future, meanwhile, has kept up his prolific ways, even amidst a pandemic. He dropped his latest album, High Off Life, in May. Beyond his work with Lil Uzi Vert, he’s also collaborated on tracks with DaBaby, Lil Yachty, Teyana Taylor, Jhené Aiko, and the late Pop Smoke. Lil Uzi Vert and Future Join Forces, Toast Themselves on Two New Songs

In a year where absolutely nothing is surprising anymore, and nothing is ever on time, Lil Uzi Vert and Future just reinvented what it means to be fashionably late. The hip-hop powerhouses came through on a promise and sort-of-surprise-dropped two new tracks “Over Your Head” and “Patek,” on Friday afternoon. While the pair teased a joint effort this month on Instagram — with a date of July 31 attached — fans were disappointed to see the release was absent from streaming services on Friday at midnight EST. But even with a tardy pass, Hendrix and Baby Pluto just came through with a pair of emo-trap slappers to help us graduate past Summer 2020. “Over Your Head” sees Uzi — who dropped his sophomore album Eternal Atake earlier this year — taking charge with Future giving the uptempo, sing...

Hinds Light a Fuse on “Spanish Bombs” with The Clash Cover: Stream

Hinds released their excellent new album The Prettiest Curse last month to help soundtrack our summer. While they were recording those songs, it turns out they were also rehearsing a cover of The Clash’s track “Spanish Bombs”. Now, they’ve released the studio version of that cover. Of course, “Spanish Bombs” comes from London Calling, The Clash’s iconic album and one of the most influential punk rock records of all time. While “Spanish Bombs” is a classic in its own right, the song has additional meaning for the members of Hinds because of its perspective on the Spanish Civil War — singer Joe Strummer was inspired to write about it after he heard about the Costa Brava hotel bombings on the radio at the time — as a piece of pop culture history. “The Clash were my mom’s forever favorite band...

Hear Travis Barker and Run the Jewels’ Explosive Collab ‘Forever’

Having already worked together on RTJ2, Run the Jewels and Travis Barker are definitely not strangers at this point. So it should come as no surprise that they rejoined forces on another new tune in the form of “Forever.” Opening with Barker on the drums, which you can see in the mini clip below, Killer Mike and El-P are ready to go into a lyrical battle with strong verses that easily ride the beat. “Rap’s Rasputin, I’m pulling pumps on pompous ass preachers and shooting/ I’m sitting on the last pew, pew-pewing/ One day, the poor will eat the affluent/ Hope you atone for you past doings,” Killer Mike delivers. Meanwhile, El-P responds with, Boulder Dash, you not getting it past rap’s Putin, who ride a horse, bareback, shooting/ A champ in the land of the stupid/ The kind that take the...

Hear The Go-Go’s High Energy Return With ‘Club Zero’

The Go-Go’s finally premieres tomorrow (Aug. 1), and they are celebrating the documentary’s release with their first new song in nearly 20 years. While some bands would try to align their sound with what’s current, The Go-Go’s go with what they’re known for — rolling guitars the grow toward the chorus. Summer beach feels all around, and we fully appreciate it. “Club Zero” was self-produced and came to fruition through a series of email conversations. It was recorded in San Francisco with co-producer/mixer/engineer Travis Kasperbauer and with Gabe Lopez in Los Angeles. And The Go-Go’s shows the Los Angeles band’s rise to fame in the early 1980s and how the went from playing in the L.A. punk rock scene to filling arenas. There will also be early footage from recording sessions as well as the...

Mastodon Announce ‘Medium Rarities’ LP, Share Ferocious Song ‘Fallen Torches’

Mastodon issued a previously unreleased song, the ferocious “Fallen Torches,” and announced a new compilation LP, Medium Rarities. The album, which follows 2017’s Emperor of Sand, is out on Sept. 11 via Reprise Records. “Fallen Torches,” like most of the set’s other rare tunes, makes its digital debut. Mastodon recorded the song last year in Atlanta, recruiting guest vocals from Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, their longtime friend and collaborator. The band originally planned to issue the track in support of a European tour, but they held off in order to focus on Stairway to Nick John, a tribute to their late longtime manager Nick John. Medium Rarities features cover versions (including Feist’s “A Commotion,” The Flaming Lips’ “A Spoonful Weighs a Ton,” Metallica’s “Orion”), soundtr...

The Go Go’s Return with “Club Zero”, First New Song in 20 Years: Stream

The Go Go’s have returned with their first new song in 20 years. Entitled “Club Zero”, the song’s release coincides with a new documentary on the band premiering on Showtime on August 1st. “Club Zero” was created via email amongst the band’s members and recorded at Lucky Recording in San Francisco and Los Angeles, according to a press release, which adds: “As the band’s stance has always been fervent when it comes to relevant issues, the anthemic, punk-infused paean arrives just in time for a world in desperate need of a voice of optimism and change.” The documentary, simply titled The Go-Go’s, was directed by Alison Ellwood, who was given full access to the band and its archive.
