Mastodon Release ‘Forged By Neron’ off Dark Nights: Death Metal Soundtrack

The Dark Nights: Death Metal Soundtrack, executive produced by Tyler Bates, sees Mastodon release “Forged By Neron” as the lead single off the collection. The soundtrack serves as a companion piece to the comics and graphic novels by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. Bates unites an array of artists across various genres—including Denzel Curry, Manchester Orchestra (who we just spoke with a few weeks ago), Chelsea Wolfe, IDLES and Soccer Mommy. The soundtrack will be released digitally by CD and Vista Loma Recordings on June 18 and physically on July 16. “We are super excited and honored to be part of the Dark Nights: Death Metal Soundtrack! We’ve all been fans of DC Comics and the Batman universe since we were kids, so it really means a lot for us to be able to add something t...

Liz Phair Releases Another New Song From Soberish With ‘In There’

As we near the June 4 release of Soberish (via Chrysalis Records), Liz Phair has blessed fans with another new track from what appears to be her triumphant return. “In There” is the third track released from Soberish, meaning that patient listeners have now heard three of the first four tunes on the 13-song album. The track, chock full of Phair’s usual thoughtful wordplay and lyricism, is a more personal look at what Phair brings to the table in 2021 compared to the previous glimpses into the new album. Centered around the theme of “vulnerability,” Phair sounds just as ready to connect with her listeners now as she did nearly two decades ago with Exile in Guyville (1993)  and Whip-Smart (1994). Check out the lyric video for “In There” below. [embedded con...

Tom Morello Teams With Ex-Styx Singer Dennis DeYoung on ‘The Last Guitar Hero’

Raise your hand if you had Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello joining forces with ex-Styx singer Dennis DeYoung on your 2021 Bingo card. If you did, well, consider yourself the unlikeliest of winners. Though Morello may not agree with Adam Sandler’s Sonny Koufax in Big Daddy that Styx is the greatest American rock band, he definitely seems to be a fan. This afternoon, Morello shared that he guested on “The Last Guitar Hero,” a track from the forthcoming DeYoung solo effort titled 26 East, Vol. 2. Supposedly, this is DeYoung’s final foray into recorded music. So why (and a better question perhaps, how) did he get Morello to participate? Leave it to the man himself to explain. “When Dennis DeYoung (the singer of STYX) sheepishly approached me about playing a shredd...

ASW Raises Mental Health Awareness and Funds Through New Single, “A Garden Overrun”

In the words of actor Glenn Close, “What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation.” It’s thanks to people like ASW that the narrative around mental health is beginning to change. The Seattle-based producer was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013, when he was placed on an involuntary hold for a week in a hospital’s mental health wing. Since his recovery, he has dedicated over 200 hours volunteering with Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit that provides free, 24/7 text-based mental health support and crisis intervention. Amid the isolating global pandemic that drastically exacerbated mental illness, ASW discovered his mission: using music and volunteerism to soothe those struggling. Out on Popgang Records, “A Garden Overrun” is the first single off AS...

Listen to Skrillex’s Hypnotic New Single With Starrah and Four Tet, “Butterflies”

Skrillex has finally dropped the curtain on new music, unveiled a stunning new collaborative track with Starrah and Four Tet called “Butterflies.” Longtime fans of the dubstep legend may be dismayed at the lack of bass, but it doesn’t make the track any less impactful. “Butterflies,” which arrives by way of Skrillex’s OWSLA banner, is a hypnotic house banger that only reinforces his reputation as the most versatile producer in electronic music. The single begins with distorted vocal chops, which act as a siren song that leads into an alluring percussive beat serenaded by Starrah’s sultry vocals. What follows are three wholly unique drops, each of which rumble with the pristine engineering and nuanced sound design for which both Skrillex and Four Te...

St. Vincent Debuts ‘Down’ Video Ahead of Daddy’s Home Release

With “Down,” the latest video from St. Vincent’s upcoming Daddy’s Home album, which has been described as “the grit of 1970s vinyl meets the grain of 1970s celluloid.” Co-directed by St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) and Bill Benz, the “Down” clip sees St. Vincent careening through a narrative in a seedy hotel, with scenes of reel-to-reel tape machines and ominous shadowy figures in the hallway adding to the mystery. “Down” follows “Pay Your Way In Pain” and “The Melting Of The Sun” — both performed on St. Vincent’s recent return to Saturday Night Live — as the final song to be released ahead of Daddy’s Home’s arrival. Check out the dramatic clip for “Down” below. [embedded content] Daddy’s Home will be out May 14 (this Friday) via Loma Vista Recordings, which she anno...

Florence + The Machine Preview ‘Call Me Cruella’ From Disney’s Cruella

Cruella, Disney’s fresh take One Hundred and One Dalmatians, will feature a new song from Florence + The Machine titled “Call Me Cruella.” “Some of the first songs I ever learned how to sing were Disney songs,”  said Florence Welch, adding, “and the villains often got the best numbers. So to help create and perform a song for Cruella is the fulfillment of a long-held childhood dream. I’m so grateful to [composer] Nicholas Britell and Disney for allowing me so much creative freedom, and for trusting me with Cruella’s beautiful madness.” The film’s official soundtrack is riddled with fan favorites, including Blondie’s “One Way Or Another,” the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy.” Cruella, which stars Emma Stone, will r...

Folamour Teams Up With SG Lewis for “Lost In Space” Off Forthcoming Album

French export Folamour has teamed up with SG Lewis for the release of “Lost In Space,” a single so euphoric that it could have only been penned by this modern day disco dream team. It is out May 5th via Folamour’s imprint, FHUO Records, with a music video due next week.  “Lost In Space” is blissfully simple in its arrangement, maintaining its infectious energy with an array of disco-pop percussion lines and atmospheric synth tones. Short and sweet, it’s driven by a funky guitar riff performed by Folamour and Lewis’ buoyant vocal tone, appearing in another artist’s work for the first time. The track was also co-written by both musicians, sharing their mutual experiences with love and loneliness while on the road.  Fola...

HNTR Debuts on deadmau5’s Mau5trap With “Shadows in the Dark”

Toronto-based DJ HNTR, the darker moniker for veteran dance music artist Hunter Seigel, is on a roll. Just last month he unveiled his second EP Mind Games on his own No Neon label, accompanied by his first NFT collection. Now, he’s making his debut on mau5trap with his new single “Shadows in the Dark” with songwriter and producer Elliot Moss. A perfect shade of sinister and mischievous, the aptly named “Shadows in the Dark” belongs in an underground warehouse dancefloor. A deep and powerful bassline, rhythmic shakers, and hypnotic synths flawlessly fuse with Moss’ haunting vocals. “Excited to show you the more progressive side of my sound and there’s no better home,” HNTR said about his mau5trap debut. HNTR has been DJing for over 20 years, opening for the likes of deadmau5 ...
