John Mayer made Sob Rock during a pandemic, but he’s all done crying now. His eighth studio album arrived Friday (July 16), and despite the weepy title, the project is actually meant to make fans smile — or even laugh. “Sob Rock is made to make you feel joy because it was made in a moment where joy was at such a premium,” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe of crafting the album during lockdown. Mayer is also hoping the LP’s retro tinges evoke a sense of nostalgia for something that never was. “The idea of Sob Rock is to implant false memories into your brain, because that’s what it did for me,” he said. “So it’s a little Black Mirror. You can’t find it. … The question is, can you have memories of things that never h...

Juini Booth, who plied his bass with some of the grandest figures in jazz history, has died at 73. Over his six decade career, Booth was a member of Sun Ra Arkestra and accompanied such legends as Art Blakey, Pharoah Sanders, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, and Coleman Hawkins. He passed away July 11th, according to Buffalo News, after a six-week decline in health preceded by breaking his hip in a fall at home. Born Arthur Edward Booth on Feb. 12th, 1948, Booth picked up his nickname from his sister Mary Booth-Bowden. “My mother would say, ‘Go call Junior!’ and I would say, ‘Juini!” she said. “He would tell everybody, ‘My sister named me!’” Booth first established himself in the jazz scene of his hometown of Buffalo, New York. He moved to New York City after an enc...
The new album from singer-songwriter Clairo is here. Titled Sling, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter’s sophomore album was co-produced alongside in-demand studio wiz Jack Antonoff. The album sees Clairo build on the vulnerable, hushed indie-pop of her 2019 debut, Immunity. Press materials for Sling describe the record as an “exploration of mental health, unmet expectations, and the struggle to treat ourselves with gentleness and love,” with a lot of the subject matter inspired by Clairo’s newly-adopted dog, Joanie. “When I got Joanie, I started changing my routines and habits to healthier ones, to try to create an environment where she felt comfortable and happy,” Clairo said in a statement. “It made me realize I hadn’t been doing that for myself, and that I need to look at myself with the...
Kevin Abstract has just released a new single called “SLUGGER” featuring Slowthai and $not. Plus, it comes with a music video directed by the BROCKHAMPTON rapper himself. Stream it after the jump. Produced by Romil Hemnani, Al Hug, and Kevin Abstract, the song is a bombastic and bold number that sees him trading verses with his fellow rappers and friends. As usual, both he and Slowthai demand your attention on “SLUGGER” with ease, spitting lines with the dexterous ease of their usual flow. Listening to Abstract do his thing, it’s easy to understand why Shia LaBeouf was inspired to write a movie about him — well, almost. “SLUGGER” is Abstract’s first solo release since dropping two EPs back in 2019: the three-track release ARIZONA BABY and a six-song collection dubbed Ghettobaby. The latter...
