Iggy Azalea Slams Accusations Of ‘Blackfishing” In New Music Video: “ Who Cares? Let ‘Em Talk”

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Matt Jelonek / Getty If she raps with a blaccent and appears dark like a blackfish, then Iggy Azalea’s latest attention-grabbing antics must be problematic, right?  That’s what critics on Twitter are saying after the rapper appeared on social media debuting a shockingly darker appearance from her latest music video “I Am The Strip Club.” According to The Grio, the drama went down after the rapper released the new song and its accompanying video last Friday.  In the video, Azalea wears a long black lacefront wig with a deep bronze skin tone. The jarring hue change reaches beyond a sunkissed look that fair-skinned people may naturally achieve if tanning under the sun.   Immediately social media was in an uproar flooding the timeline with...

Eight months after his untimely passing, MF Doom is getting a street named after him in his hometown of Long Beach, New York. According to HipHopDX, a petition to name one block of East Hudson Street between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach Road was organized by Dr. Patrick C. Graham — a former classmate who attended Long Beach High School with the late rapper — on behalf of a larger collective calling themselves the KMD-MF DOOM Way Committee. “I had several community members contact me to see if I could get engaged with it,” Dr. Graham told the outlet, adding, “I used to run the Martin Luther King Center there, so I still have a close connection to the community. I was born and raised there, went to high school with Dumile. So I said give me a minute and I’ll craft a letter to the City ...

Thurston Moore’s New Memoir Sonic Life Set for Publication

With touring and most typical forms of recording shut down during the pandemic, many musicians found new ways to channel their artistic urges. Thurston Moore threw himself into writing, resulting in a new memoir called Sonic Life, which has just been picked up for publication. The Sonic Youth co-founder first mentioned work on the book while speaking with Vulture late last year. “This downtime period allowed me to do this,” he said at the time, “so I have this manuscript called Sonic Life that I probably will publish at some point in 2021.” Though publication rights for the memoir were indeed secured, Moore’s timeline was a little off — by two years. According to industry website The Book Seller, Doubleday bought the rights to Sonic Life at auction and set it for a 2023 rele...

In a video shot at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Halsey also unveiled the album art, which you can see below. [embedded content] On Instagram, Halsey explained the album’s meaning and theme: This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It was very important to me that the cover art conveyed the sentiment of my journey over the past few months. The dichotomy of the Madonna and the Whore. The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that ...

Bo Burnham’s ‘Inside’ Goes International With Global Chart Hit ‘All Eyes on Me’

Since then, “Eyes” has grown, rising 72% in streams and 39% in sales in the latest tracking week. The song’s streams split 81% from audio services and 19% video services this week, which may be surprising considering its original state was as part of a visual comedy special on Netflix. Still, that slant toward audio streaming is in line with most titles from Inside (Songs), a strong showing for Burnham’s songwriting to stand on its own. The album’s first focus track, “Internet,” remains the set’s most-streamed track worldwide in the week ending July 1, at 8.7 million, but falls behind “Eyes” in sales, with 800 sold. However, with the latter title’s robust gains and the former’s steadier activity, it wouldn’t...
