Kara DioGuardi’s New Singing Competition Puts Mental Health in Focus

“Some of the greatest songs out there were born of our artists’ struggles,” DioGuardi tells Billboard. “So as an industry, I think it’s really important that we look forward [to] helping our artists with their mental health and their wellness — that that becomes something that is on the forefront of all of these record companies’ minds when they’re signing talent today.” Sing It Forward’s eight semi-finalists (Jay Alan, Conor, Sydney Sherwood, Cameron Lane, Alexander Hensley, Jessa Pontier, Govan and Janie) were chosen from around 1,000 entrants who posted an original or cover song to YouTube, TikTok or Instagram with the hashtag #SingItForwardChallenge while explaining why the song was important to them. The winner will receive a raft of prizes, including a s...

Kurt Cobain’s Hair, Eddie Van Halen Guitar Among Items in Rock Auction

The items are part of a slate of rock items being offered up by Iconic Auction, spanning Elvis to grunge. The auction closes Saturday (May 15). A portion of proceeds will benefit Crew Nation, a relief fund for live music touring and venue crews who are facing hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic. The item with the highest minimum is a collarless, dark blue jacket custom made for Paul McCartney that starts at $25,000. It was worn onstage over a six-night stand at Bournemouth, England’s Gaumont Theatre in 1963. Tricia Eaton, East Coast consignment director at Iconic Auctions, said the jacket is one of the Beatles’ earliest stage-worn garments ever to come to market and captures the band pivoting from jeans and leather jackets. There’s also a copy of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts C...

KK’s Priest (Ex-Judas Priest Members KK Downing, Tim “Ripper” Owens) Announce Debut Album, Unleash “Hellfire Thunderbolt”: Stream

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-12T15:51:44+00:00“>May 12, 2021 | 11:51am ET KK’s Priest, the new group featuring ex-Judas Priest members KK Downing and Tim “Ripper” Owens, have announced their debut LP, Sermons of the Sinner. The band has also shared the lead single, “Hellfire Thunderbolt”. Considering the pedigree of the musicians involved, the new song is a slab of classic heavy metal worthy of the “Priest” nomenclature. Downing’s fierce guitarwork and Tim the Ripper’s vocals are right out front, with the remaining complex instrumental parts being played by bassist Tony Newton, guitarist A.J. Mills, and drummer Sean Elg. KK’s Priest is an update of sorts on the Ripper-era of Judas Priest. Owens fronted the U...

Madness Transform Kimmel into “Our House”: Watch

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-12T16:33:41+00:00“>May 12, 2021 | 12:33pm ET Time is a walking bass line, and despite some funky digressions along the way, we always seem to wind up back where we started. Perhaps that’s why a certain brand of pre-reggae Jamaican jamming keeps getting re-interpreted for different eras, and why the two-tone legends Madness are once again skascendent. The UK outfit is gearing up for a 2022 tour, and which they’ll preview with a new livestream, “The Get Up”, on May 14th. This busyness is to expected, because, as they demonstrated on Kimmel last night, during the skanaissance, every house is “Our House”. “Our House” came out on the 1982 album The Rise & Fall, ...

Subaru’s New 2023 Electric SUV Gets a Name: Solterra

See all 17 photos According to Subaru, the name is an amalgamation of the Latin words for “sun” and “Earth,” so you can bet that while the Solterra’s powertrain is a change of pace for Subaru, its wholesome, crunchy-granola, dog-loving vibe will surely be played up to commensurate levels. Subaru has revealed the 2023 Solterra’s tailgate badge as well as a shadowy image of the entire SUV, unhelpfully backlit by Sol while it travels across some terra firma. From what we can make out, the Solterra appears to have a long wheelbase, with its wheels pushed to each corner, and a generally sleeker-than-Subie-typical shape. Aerodynamics surely played a role in the smooth profile—minimizing drag helps maximize driving range per charge. And there is a clear (and un...

The UK Sets Rules Defining, Legalizing Self-Driving Cars

But we’re not talking self-driving vehicles like those you’re probably thinking of. Instead, the UK Department for Transport says”Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS) could legally be defined as self-driving, as long as they receive GB type approval and that there is no evidence to challenge the vehicle’s ability to self-drive.” Under new rules, the system should work in a single lane and be able to control the vehicle’s position under 37 mph (60 km/h). When self-driving mode is active, the driver is not required to monitor the road and goes hands-free from steering. And when the system deems human input is necessary, the driver has to respond within 10 seconds (no sleeping). If not, the system should turn on hazard lights and slow the vehicle down to a ...

Grimes Hospitalized for Panic Attack Days After Elon Musk’s SNL Episode

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-12T16:38:46+00:00“>May 12, 2021 | 12:38pm ET Grimes has been uncharacteristically quiet since her partner Elon Musk made his Saturday Night Live debut over the weekend, and now we know why. Last night, the Canadian singer revealed one of the reasons why: She was hospitalized for a panic attack earlier this week. “Forgot to post these cuz I somehow caused myself to have a panic attack and went to the hospital yesterday which tbh was quite scary and I suppose it’s a good time to start therapy,” she wrote on Instagram. “But nonetheless – wowwwww @mileycyrus is good live and so chill! So grateful to the SNL team for being so kind and letting me sneak in as princess peach [and] s...

The LP is being repressed on vinyl and will available on digital platforms for the first time on June 25th. The Reno punk act can be seen as a precursor to groups like the Gorilla Biscuits, promoting a positive lyrical message and communal camaraderie, as seen on the album cover for The Crew. Russian Dolls Talk ‘Masked Singer’ Exit: ‘I’m Pretty Sure We’re Not Sugarland’

After talking about being ridiculed for trying to do their thing earlier in their career and laughing their way through guesses that ranged from Menudo to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Boyz II Men and the Jonas Brothers, when push came to shove, it could only be one family band under those massive heads: Hanson. The trio of Taylor, Isaac and Zac had the panel stumped for most of this season, but if you’ve followed the Tulsa-bred band’s 25-plus-year career at all, those harmonies were unmistakable. On Wednesday, the Grammy-winning “MmmBop” trio also announced their seventh studio album, Against the World, which will premiere in seven consecutive monthly singles throughout the rest of the year, beginning with lead single “Annalie,” out now. The brothers have ...
