The weeks leading up to Porter Robinson‘s Nurture have been marked by nothing but frisson. Ahead of the release, the Grammy-nominated electronic music virtuoso appeared on a new episode of Song Exploder to dive into Nurture cut “Get Your Wish.” Robinson says that “Get Your Wish,” which was recorded on his mother’s childhood piano, was written at a crossroads in his life when he questioned whether or not the success he was experiencing was beneficial to his longterm mental health. This time “shaped his identity,” he says. One of the interview’s unquestioned highlights comes just past the m...
After falsely claiming that the state of Nevada requires proof of vaccination at large-scale events, the organizers of Burning Man have backpedaled and addressed concerns from the festival’s community. According to the New York Post, the counter culture community lambasted CEO Marian Goodell after an April 8th update in which she suggested that the iconic festival would require proof of inoculation to gain entry. An ensuing video message shared by Goodell confirmed the plans. “We are super aware [of concerns] and thank you for your feedback, and we are weighing the gravity of what that does,” Goodell said in an ensuing statement shared on April 17th. “And we know that [mandatory vaccination] challenges the concepts of radical inclusion, but at this po...

After signing to Def Jam in 1997, The Darkman blazed through the hip-hop sphere like a raging fireball, torching every feature he appeared on. From LL Cool J’s “4, 3, 2, 1 (Remix)” to The LOX’s “Money, Power, Respect,” X scarfed down every appearance with ease. The main course arrived a year later when he unleashed his seminal debut album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot. Stacked with hard-hitting bangers, X’s electric flows reminded listeners that New York hip-hop hadn’t lost its edge, and that the rapper born Earl Simmons was ready to be the cornerstone of this new style. It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot rocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — the first of five consecutive DMX projects to do so. “I thi...
Justin Timberlake is taking a stand on Earth Day (April 22) against the Byhalia Pipeline potentially being built in his Memphis, Tenn., hometown. The pop star shared an informational video, made by digital creator Mikhaila Markham, on his Instagram that points out how the city of Memphis — known as the home of Elvis Presley and shaped by its influential blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll music — is also on top of the Memphis Sand Aquifer, a water source near the Mississippi River that supplies trillions of gallons of the world’s finest drinking water to 1 million locals. Valero Energy Corporation and the Plains All American pipeline company’s latest proposal, the 49-mile Byhalia Pipeline, could put this groundwater at risk by connecting two pipelines to ...
“I wasn’t really into trying to rap or do hip-hop or nothing like that because everybody in my neighborhood was doing it,” he tells Billboard. “I didn’t really want to jump into that.” A near-death experience in 2011 that found Warlick staring down the barrel of a .45 caliber pistol led him down a new direction, spiritually and creatively. After winning $1,400 in a talent show, Warlick and some friends celebrated in a nightclub, when his friend got into an altercation. Warlick swiftly ushered his friend to the exit, then turned and saw everyone fighting. Outside the club, two men chased him, cornered him, and one pulled a gun. “My grandma always said if I was in a time of need, just call on God. That’s what I did,” Warlick recalls. The man holding the firearm pulled the t...
The two are no strangers to video games, as they often play together in their downtime at the studio, Gunna told Billboard. “I always been playing Call of Duty,” he said. “But they hit me up and [asked] was I interested in doing the commercial and I was.” While there wasn’t much acting involved in the short film, he says he can see himself doing more of it in the future. On Friday, Young Stoner Life Records released Slime Language 2, the follow-up to 2018’s Slime Language. “It was just fun. It was really like family, we just really had fun with it,” the “Skybox” rapper said of working with his labelmates. “It wasn’t nothing like forced or nothing like that. We kind of just had songs ready, and when we felt the ri...
