Poet Amanda Gorman Shares Details Of Chilling Encounter With Security Guard

Source: Rob Carr / Getty Amanda Gorman is one of the most visible figures in America after a show-stopping display of poetry during the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. However, the 23-year-old poet and activist shared details of a chilling encounter with a security guard that could have gone left. Last Friday (March 5), Gorman shared details of the encounter via Twitter with the same proud determination that informs her works. “A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because “you look suspicious.” I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology. This is the reality of black girls: One day you’re called an icon, the next day, a threat,” read the tweet. A security guard tailed me on my w...

A New Album Hasn’t Cracked the Billboard Top 10 in Three Weeks

For the first time since 2000, a newly released album has failed to appear in the Billboard Top 10 for three consecutive weeks. Per Billboard, Foo Fighters’ Medicine at Midnight and Pooh Shiesty’s Sheisty Season were the most recent albums to have cracked the Top 10 upon their first week of release — back on February 20th. In the three weeks since then, the charts have been dominated by older releases, including Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Dangerous Album, which has now spent eight straight weeks at No. 1, as well as Ariana Grande’s Positions, Pop Smoke’s Shoot For the Stars Aim for the Moon, Lil Durk’s The Voice, The Weeknd’s After Hours, and Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia. Many of these releases — such as Grande’s Positions, Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, and BTS’s BE — have been fuel...

Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett Reunite for First Performance in Six Years: Watch

We’ve officially lived a full decade without the existence of Rilo Kiley. Since the band split, singer Jenny Lewis and lead guitarist Blake Sennett have only reunited once, when the latter joined the former on stage at Coachella in 2015 for “Portions for Foxes”. Nearly six years later, it’s finally happened again, as the pair reunited over the weekend to take part in Linda Perry’s Rock-N-Relief livestream event. Lewis and Sennett delivered what could be their first-ever performance of “Let Me Back In”, a single from the 2013 compilation LP RKives. With a masked Sennett playing his acoustic guitar behind her, and a sweet little floof of a puppy on her lap, Lewis sang to camera, checking an off-camera lyrics sheet every so often. Memorized or not, it was a darling pre-recorded rendition, and...

Brittany Howard Covers Jackie Wilson’s “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher”: Stream

One of the biggest voices of this century is following one of the biggest voices of the last, as Brittany Howard has shared a new cover of “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” by Jackie Wilson. Released in 1967, “Higher and Higher” is not for the faint-hearted or pitch-challenged. “Mr Excitement” Wilson had a four-octave range, and on this, his signature song, he kept his voice moving. That’s no problem for Howard, whose picture you can find in the dictionary under “Powerhouse.” If anything, the rendition by the leader of Alabama Shakes has a little extra ferocity. Howard’s “Higher and Higher” skips over the original’s hand drums and prominent bass riff, preferring a drum kit and guitar-forward sound. She also uses a heavenly choir to a put a little extra height on those “Highe...

The revealing episode is currently available to stream on all major podcast platforms. Check out all three of Baker’s CBS This Morning perf...

Architects Draw First No. 1 In Australia

For Those That Wish To Exist also rules this week’s ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart and it’s the best seller in the U.K. Coming in at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart is Sheppard’s third album Kaleidoscope Eyes. It’s the Brisbane pop band’s third straight Top Two album, having hit No. 2 with their 2014 debut album Bombs Away and No. 1 with 2018’s Watching The Sky. Rounding out an all-new Top Three this week is Alice Cooper’s Detroit Stories. It’s the shock-rock legend’s highest-charting album in the ARIA charts era, equaling the peak of his 1977’s Lace And Whiskey. (The ARIA Charts were launched in 1983.) Detroit Stories becomes Cooper’s eighth Top Ten album in Australia and second successive Top Ten studio album, following Paranormal (No. 4 in August 2017). Also new to the chart th...

Michael Gudinski’s State Memorial Set For Rod Laver Arena

The 15,000-capacity first opened its doors for a concert back in 1988, when AC/DC rocked the house. In the years since, Gudinski’s Mushroom Group and Frontier Touring have brought some of the world’s biggest artists to Melbourne & Olympic Parks, including Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran. Gudinski passed away last Monday (March 1), at the age of 68. As news spread, Rod Laver Arena and the neighboring AAMI Park were lit up as a mark of respect. Last Wednesday, Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the music man would be remembered “somewhere iconic that we can come together and celebrate his life.” He continued, “It will be a celebration of his life; the details will be finalized in coming days. It’s got to be COVID-safe of co...

Drake’s ‘What’s Next’ In Striking Distance of U.K. No. 1

Just 800 chart sales separate “Wellerman,” the leader on the First Look chart, and Olivia Rodrigo’s third-placed song “Drivers License,” the OCC reports. Last Friday, “Drivers License” logged its eighth successive week at No. 1 with another strong set of streaming results. A lead change isn’t out of the question. All three tracks from Drake’s Scary Hours 2 EP are poised to impact the Top 10, with “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” at No. 4 and “Wants and Needs” at No. 5. If the Canadian hip-hop star holds his momentum, he’ll have his 24th, 25th and 26th Top 10 singles in the U.K. when the chart is published this Friday. Also new to the chart blast is “Leave The Door Open” by Silk Sonic, the new project from Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. It’s at No. 16. Mars already has 18th Top 20 singles, wh...

Mural of Trans Icon SOPHIE Installed in Sydney Ahead of LGBTQ+ Mardi Gras

This week in Sydney, LGBTQ+ community advocates and musical duo Stereogamus paid homage to the late SOPHIE with their commission of a giant mural in her likeness. Placed next to a painting of queer icon George Michael, the murlal’s reveal came just ahead of the city’s LGBTIQA Mardi Gras celebration on March 6th.  The work was created by local artist Scott Marsh, who painted the Michael tribute just last year. Featuring an angel halo and the lyrics, “It’s okay to cry,” the mural memorializes SOPHIE at her finest. A leading trans woman in the electronic dance music industry, SOPHIE tragically died following an accidental fall in Athens on January 30th, 2021. “Losing her has been a painful experience for our community,” Stereogamus said...

Yotto Presents “A Very Cold DJ Set” from Lapland’s Frosted Hills

“A group of wild Finns climbed uphill with a generator, DJ gear and cases filled with sensitive equipment designed for a less daring environment.” While this may sound like the start of a strange fairytale, it’s Finnish DJ Yotto’s way of announcing his tongue-in-cheek “A Very Cold DJ Set.” Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to shutter live music events, the dance music industry has been keeping fans entertained with creative virtual performances. Artists often film in natural scenic locales—like Ben Böhmer in the hills of Cappadocia—and brands have developed epic, digital worlds, like Tomorrowland’s jaw-dropping NYE festival. Trading the green screen for the great outdoors, Yotto took to the icy hills of Lapland to showcase a rousing selection of progressive house gems.&nb...
